This SAE Standard provides a uniform method for determining rated and struck capacity for buckets used on excavators, mini-excavators, and backhoes as defined in SAE J1057 and equipped with hoe attachment. Calculations are based on the inside physical dimensions of the bucket only, without use of optional side cutters, spill guards, teeth, or other accessories and without regard to bucket action provided by any specific machine. This document does not cover shovel, clam, or dragline buckets described in SAE J67 or loaders buckets described in SAE J742.

This standard is intended for cutting edge sections used on: (1) Tractor-scrapers as described in SAE J1057 and J728. (2) Dozers as described in SAE J173. These cutting edges are further defined in SAE J738 for cross section and SAE J740 for hole conformation.

The recommended practice applies to straight blade, angling blade, U blade, and semi-U blades used on earthmoving tractors per SAE J1057a up to a maximum weight of 100,000 lb (45,000 kg).

This standard is intended for cutting edge sections used on: a. Tractor-scrapers as described in SAE J1057 and J728 b. Dozers as described in SAE J729. These cutting edges are further defined in SAE J738 for cross section and SAE J740 and J1580 for hole conformation. (Note: Some inch dimentions in this standard are not equivalent to the corresponding millimeter figures because values which are widely used have been adapted. This standard specifies hole placement along with length and width of the cutting edge.
