CHEVROLET has made its new air-suspension system easily interchangeable in production line assembly with standard full-coil suspension by adopting a 4-link-type rear suspension with short and long arms. A feature of the system is the mounting of the leveling valves within the air-spring assemblies. These valves correct riding height continually at a moderate rate, regardless of whether the springs are leveling or operating in ride motion. The system provides constant frequency ride—ride comfort remains the same whether the car is occupied by the driver alone or is fully loaded.

The environment is one of the most important issues currently facing the world and the automobile industry is required to respond with eco-cars. To meet this requirement, the hybrid vehicle is one of the most optimal solutions. The hybrid system automatically stops engine idling (idling stop), or stops the engine during deceleration to recover energy. The engine stop however creates a problem concerning the vehicle's climate control system. Because the conventional climate control system incorporates a compressor driven by engine belt, there is almost no cooling performance while the engine is stopped. Until now, when a driver needed more cooling comfort the engine has been switched back on as a compromise measure. To realize cabin comfort that is consistent with fuel saving, a 2-way driven compressor has been developed that can be driven both by engine belt while the engine is running and by electric motor when the engine is stopped.

The demands for comfort and a cleaner environment have been increasing for the past years for motorcycle as well as car manufacturers. With the need to decrease the time-to-market, there is a clear drive to apply CAE-based methods in order to evaluate new designs and to propose design changes that solve any identified problems. More specifically, the demands on the comfort of the rider are not only related to ride & handling and vibration levels(1), but also to the noise levels generated by the motorcycle. This paper presents the virtual modeling of one-cylinder engine of a motorcycle that identifies the mechanism behind the generation of an annoying noise. Furthermore, different possible design changes were evaluated in order to solve the problem. A combined experimental and numerical approach was followed to achieve this. Experiments were used to identify important parameters that determine the engine behavior and thus are critical for the modeling of such an engine.

This paper presents the conceptual design of a high-power, high-speed tractor-trailer for severe duty applications. Design of the tractor-trailer introduces several new concepts, including the general vehicle architecture, a new electrical transmission system and a new electric tandem axle. The vehicle architecture consists of a low drag cab concept with a fully integrated turbo-generator power source, an exhaust gas electric decontamination system and auxiliaries. The electric transmission introduces a new combination of electrical machines and power electronics designed to perform under maximum load with minimum dimension, weight and price. The electric tandem axle is a new concept of an all-wheel steering independent suspension with virtual electromagnetic differential.

27 A New Method for Valve Seat without Ring

A surface modification method by electrical discharge has been developed for the valve seats of aluminum cylinder heads. This method employs a conventional electrical discharge machine to generate continuous discharge arcs between an electrode and a cylinder head, whereby the molten electrode material is transferred and clad onto the valve seat area on the cylinder head. Using this new cladding method, a wear-resistant cladding can be formed on each valve seat area in a matter of minutes and, if the same number of electrodes as valve seat areas are set one on one, all the valve seat areas can be clad simultaneously. The advantages of this method include local cladding capability, outstanding adhesion, quick cladding speed, and excellent adaptability to various types of engines. The chemical composition of the cladding was determined by a preliminary test using dynamo engines, and the durability of the cladding was evaluated using the same dynamo engines.

3-D horn is a vehicle to vehicle communication-based technology which helps in reducing the noise pollution, which occurs, due to honking of automobile horns by letting only the drivers of the automobile to hear the horns and not the whole environment around him. To achieve this, several relatively small horn speakers are placed inside the car. These speakers are controlled by drivers of other cars. In this way honking will be heard only by the drivers. The most unique feature of this technology is the 3-D effect caused by the speakers which will let the driver know the location of the outside car which is honking. The 3-D effect is achieved by varying the intensity and proper allotment of sound to the positioned speakers in such a way that it will give the feel of the location of the outside car to the driver. Human detection is another important feature this technology provides. It will recognize whether the horn is honked for an automobile or for a human.

3D Audio Reproduction via Headrest Equipped with Loudspeakers—Investigations on Acoustical Design Criteria

This paper focuses on the analysis and evaluation of acoustical design criteria to produce a plausible 3D sound field solely via headrest with integrated loudspeakers at the driver/passenger seats in the car cabin. Existing audio systems in cars utilize several distributed loudspeakers to support passengers with sound. Such configurations suffer from individual 3D audio information at each position. Therefore, we present a convincing minimal setup focusing sound solely at the passenger’s ears. The design itself plays a critical role for the optimal reproduction and control of a sound field for a specific 3D audio application. Moreover, the design facilitates the 3D audio reproduction of common channel-based, scene-based, and object-based audio formats. In addition, 3D audio reproduction enables to represent warnings regarding monitoring of the vehicle status (e.g.: seat belts, direction indicator, open doors, luggage compartment) in spatial accordance.

3D Head Models for Protective Helmet Development

In order to improve the fit and comfort of helmets, we developed digital head models that represent the anthropometric and morphometric variability found in the U.S. Navy. We analyzed the size and shape variation using two related approaches. First, we used Procrustes superimposition, which minimizes the distances between all landmarks of all subjects. This allowed us to visualize the variation in landmark distribution of the face and to test for statistical differences. Second, we extracted curvatures along the surface of the head. This allowed us to characterize the variation in the shape of the head. To create a series of sized digital models, we used principal component analysis (PCA) to organize the variation in both the traditional measurements as well as the locations of the 3D landmarks. Using an adaptation of multivariate accommodation modeling we identified representative individuals who characterize 95% of the variation in size and shape.

3D Simulation Methodology to Predict Passenger Thermal Comfort Inside a Cabin

The vehicle Heating, Ventilation and Air conditioning (HVAC) system is designed to meet both the safety and thermal comfort requirements of the passengers inside the cabin. The thermal comfort requirement, however, is highly subjective and is usually met objectively by carrying out time dependent mapping of parameters like the velocity and temperature at various in-cabin locations. These target parameters are simulated for the vehicle interior for a case of hot soaking and its subsequent cool-down to test the efficacy of the AC system. Typically, AC performance is judged by air temperature at passenger locations, thermal comfort estimation along with time to reach comfortable condition for human. Simulating long transient vehicle cabin for thermal comfort evaluation is computationally expensive and involves complex cabin material modelling.

3D Vortex Simulation of Intake Flow in a Port-Cylinder with a Valve Seat and a Moving Piston

A Lagrangian random vortex-boundary element method has been developed for the simulation of unsteady incompressible flow inside three-dimensional domains with time-dependent boundaries, similar to IC engines. The solution method is entirely grid-free in the fluid domain and eliminates the difficult task of volumetric meshing of the complex engine geometry. Furthermore, due to the Lagrangian evaluation of the convective processes, numerical viscosity is virtually removed; thus permitting the direct simulation of flow at high Reynolds numbers. In this paper, a brief description of the numerical methodology is given, followed by an example of induction flow in an off-centered port-cylinder assembly with a harmonically driven piston and a valve seat situated directly below the port. The predicted flow is shown to resemble the flow visualization results of a laboratory experiment, despite the crude approximation used to represent the geometry.

Consistency with this specification allows each component installed on the seat to operate in concert when integrated with other relevant cabin type equipment. Standard electrical and mechanical interfaces of the In- Flight Entertainment System (IFES) equipment for the 3rd Generation Cabin Network (3GCN) associated with the seat are defined. This equipment consists of the headphone jacks (HPJ), passenger control unit (PCU)/multi function handset (including the cord), seat video display (SVD), remote data outlet (RDO), integrated seat box (ISB) which includes the seat power box (SPB)/seat data box (SDB), remote power outlet (RPO), and in-seat cables. Appropriate definitions are also provided for other electrical devices associated with the seat control/position mechanism.

Based on the success of the second-generation Genesis G80 model, Hyundai Motor has declared the independence of Genesis as a luxury car brand in 2015. The third-generation G80 is the representative model of the Genesis brand and has a unique identity of Genesis that can surpass its competitors. In addition, it was necessary to develop seats that were considered not only for ICE but also for the scalability of electric vehicles. A newly formed Genesis organization established the Genesis design philosophy of its own. Four key elements of the design philosophy were comfort, aesthetics, usability and safety. The third-generation Genesis seats incorporate its design philosophy of seat design and new technologies based on comfort, aesthetics, usability, and safety. This paper describes the seat development of the Ergo Motion seat, Rear Seat Relaxtion(Relax + Position), Seat Syling, AVN switch display and PSS(pre-active safety seat )system, which are representative technologies.

Electrical Air Conditioning Systems for 42 V vehicles will provide many benefits in terms of Environment protection, car Architecture, cabin Comfort and overall Safety. E-A/C Systems essentially differ from conventional ones by the use of electrical compressors. First of all, they will be particularly well adapted to new powertrains, helping to make them more environmentally friendly. Accurate control and high efficiency under the most common thermal conditions will reduce the A/C impact on fuel consumption. Besides, higher sealing integrity will cut emissions of refrigerant during normal operation and maintenance. Secondly, the use of an electrically driven compressor (EDC) will suppress a belt, and will reduce the packaging constraints. This will help to design new vehicle architectures. The significance and the number of vehicle safety features enabled via connectivity continue to increase. OnStar, with its automatic airbag notification, was one of the first vehicle safety features that demonstrate the enhanced safety benefits of connectivity. Vehicle connectivity benefits have grown to include remote software updates, data analytics to aid with preventative maintenance and even to theft prevention and recovery. All of these services require available and reliable connectivity. However, except for the airbag notification, none have strict latency requirements. For example, software updates can generally be postponed till reliable connectivity is available. Data required for prognostic use cases can be stored and transmitted at a later time. A new set of use cases are emerging that do demand continuous, reliable and low latency connectivity. For example, remote control of autonomous vehicles may be required in unique situations.

64 Ergonomic Approaches to Improved Scooter Riding Comfort

This paper gives a report on ergonomic approaches we tried to scooters for improvements in their riding comfort. First we conducted investigations into riding postures that offer a comfortable scooter ride. That is, we picked out major items for the evaluation of scooter riding postures and investigated a correlation between those items and their physical quantities. Our investigation revealed that room for leg and arm movements played a major role in a scooter riding posture. We further found out a high correlation between the evaluation items for legroom and the knee angles and also high correlation between the evaluation items for legroom and the ankle angle. Next we report on the result of the attempt we made at improved riding comfort by equipping the scooter seat with a backrest. To check the effects of backrest, we measured the seating pressure distribution, myogenic potential, and cardiogenic potential.

Changes in air transport operating environment are examined to show how they are beginning to change the design and use of transport aircraft. The essential requirement of the changing market is seen to be a new flexibility to provide (a) versatility in the quantity of normal on-demand seats provided in each market, (b) suitability for high capacity seasonal bulk class operations, and (c) suitability for expanding the cargo load capability on selected passenger flights. Airplane characteristics and advanced technology to satisfy the requirements of the new operating flexibility are discussed.
