SAE Showcase: Start Your Engines

John Lloyd's involvement with SAE International goes back to grade school. 

John shares his own personal STEM story starting with the SAE A World In Motion® (AWIM) in elementary school, to Kettering University and the Formula SAE team, to a vehicle engineer at Ford Motor Company. 

I first became involved with SAE through their Formula SAE series. I attended Kettering University in Flint, MI with the intention joining their Formula team as soon as possible – a decision I made right after I discovered the program while in high school. The thought of learning how to design, build, and race a formula car created quite the spark for someone just starting college.

Fast-forward to the end of my college career, I can’t begin to count the number of things I learned through formula. It was one thing to learn in the classroom, but it was another to apply it (and sometimes fail). Experiencing the triumph of success and defeat of failure really helped me grow as an engineer.

I would tell anyone considering getting involved with SAE to just do it; you can only learn by trying. The hands-on experience is worth so much, especially as you get further along in your academic career. Once you start making your own conclusions based on things you learned in and out of the classroom is when it really gets fun. From there, the sky is the limit.
