SAE/Timken-Howard Simpson Automotive Transmission and Driveline Innovation Award

Funded through an endowment from the Timken Company in 2007, this award honors Howard Simpson an extremely talented and innovative engineer.  Simpson invented a revolutionary planetary gear set which constituted the basis for the Ford C4 and C5 transmission produced or the famous Chrysler Torqueflite transmission and several General Motors transmission models.

As a testament to Howard Simpson’s commitment to technical innovation and creativity, this award recognizes an individual or a team from the automotive industry for outstanding contributions to the technology progress and dissemination in the area of automotive transmission and driveline. The award acknowledges new ideas, concepts, innovations or applications that will assist in improving this technology.

There is a $15,000 honorarium included with this award and is it presented at the SAE Awards Ceremony.
