This SAE Aerospace Standard (AS) defines a data communications Transport Layer for the Joint Architecture for Unmanned Systems (JAUS). This Transport Specification defines the formats and protocols employed for the transport of JAUS messages between compliant entities for all supported link-layer protocols and media.
Rationale:
The use of unmanned systems is a key component in a strategy to reduce exposing personnel to hazardous situations and harmful environments. Unmanned systems can also provide cost-effective solutions to the performance of repetitive tasks. As a result, a large number of unmanned system products are being introduced to the market. However, many of these systems are characterized as task specific and non-interoperable, limiting choices regarding both what can be done with these systems and which devices may command them to do it.
A standard open architecture for unmanned systems is required to remedy these difficulties – to support the rapid and cost-effective development and maintenance of unmanned systems. The JAUS suite of standards provides such a solution. This JAUS Transport Specification supplies the transport layer for this standards suite (working on top of common communications media), providing a common substrate on which higher-level application messaging for unmanned systems functionality may be defined.
