Aircraft Shimmy Analysis Methods and Data Requirements
This Aerospace Information Report will summarize several existing aircraft landing gear shimmy analysis techniques and provide guidance on the synthesis and testing of tire properties, strut properties, and other landing gear mechanical properties that support the various shimmy analysis methods. This AIR is applicable to large and small fixed wing and rotary wing aircraft for military or civilian use.
Rationale: An equivalent document does not exist at this time. Conditions which lead to landing gear shimmy are important to understand in the development of an aircraft. The purpose of this document is to provide an airframe manufacturer, landing gear manufacturer, or component supplier with methodologies to conduct shimmy analysis throughout the development. A proper shimmy analysis requires design data and physical test data. This document provides information on data requirements and test techniques to support shimmy analysis.
