Considerations for Prevention of Moisture Damage in Aircraft Electro-mechanical Actuation Equipment
AIR8442
Failures due to moisture ingress to vulnerable electrical and mechanical equipment are not uncommon on aircraft and in test programs. This Aerospace Information Report aims to inform the aerospace community of considerations to be taken regarding potential moisture damage in the design of EM actuation equipment.
Rationale: This AIR identifies typical aircraft operating environments that lead to the infiltration of moisture, test requirements presently applied by industry, descriptions and examples of common failure modes for different types of equipment exposed to moisture, and practices that have proven successful in preventing common problems. While successful practices are identified herein, there are no specific recommendations presented, as the appropriate solutions are often driven by application-specific considerations that cannot be fully comprehended by a general document.
