System level Protection and Coordination in High Voltage aerospace applications
ARP7159
The scope of this report is first to establish applicable definitions and general specification and terms prior to considering the application domain and use cases in HVDC applications. Then it will describe the methods of protection and system level coordination to and define different coordinated protection schemes to consider for aerospace application.
Rationale: Future aircraft programs employ high voltage direct current (HVDC) as primary sources of electric power.
In these conditions, Electrical fault clarification requires fast acting switching devices to protect the aircraft electrical installation and limit potential damages. The intent of this Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) is to gather information and define system level characteristics of protective topologies and coordination methods to ensure a safe system in High Voltage Direct Current aerospace application.
