This SAE Aerospace Standard (AS) establishes Minimum Performance Standards (MPS) for life rafts carried on board aircraft. This document is not intended to specify particular design methods, mechanisms, or equipment to be used to accomplish the objectives established herein.
Rationale: ARP1356A has been converted to AS1356, at the request of the FAA, to support revision of Technical Standard Order C 70. The AS incorporates lessons learned from independent testing, and from maritime and aviation life raft standards, to provide a minimum acceptable level of life saving performance under conditions likely to be experienced in use and consistent with current technology. The inclusion of performance-based standards for as many design criteria as is practical supports innovation, while allowing continued use of proven designs and materials.
