Rationale: This document has been developed concurrently with the SAE J2691 “15 Pole Connector Between Towing Vehicles and Trailers with 12 volt Nominal Supply” Standard. The cable and connectors provide the system for conveying power, ground and signal to support the trailer ECBS (Electronically Controlled Braking System) and anticipated, mid-term future requirements. In addition the system will meet all the requirements of the SAE J2394/J560 system since the new cable must be compatible with non-ECBS trailers. The system is being designed with improved performance characteristics, both environmental and electrical, when compared to the 7-circuit system. As the truck trailer industry moves towards more advanced electronic systems, the connector in this standard would become more and more dominant. Over a period of time, the SAE J560 connector would no longer be used and the connector in this standard would be the single connector interfacing towing and towed ECBS equipped vehicles.
