Performance Characterization of Electrified Powertrain Motor-Drive Subsystem
J2907_201802
This document was developed to provide a method of obtaining repeatable measurements that accurately reflects the performance of a propulsion electric drive subsystem, whose output is used in an electrified vehicle regardless of complexity or number of energy sources. The purpose is to provide a familiar and easy-to-understand performance rating. Whenever there is an opportunity for interpretation of the document, a good faith effort shall be made to obtain the typical in-service performance and characteristics and avoid finding the best possible performance under the best possible conditions. Intentional biasing of operating parameters or assembly tolerances to optimize performance for this test shall not be considered valid results in the scope of this document.
Rationale:
This document puts forth a foundation for the standardization of electric traction motors, as a component of an electric traction drive system, and as the means to validate manufacturer specified maximum (net) power and maximum 30 minute power. The core procedures specify the performance of vehicle testing in a laboratory setting on a dynamometer using a regulated power supply with all instrumentation having current calibration and certification documentation. The results are summarized in a communications document (Appendix A) comparing measured maximum (net) power and maximum 30 minute power against manufacturer declared values. An acceptance criteria is applied to support a pass/fail classification.
In addition, the procedures herein define very specific conditions so that results obtained are: i) unambiguous; ii) measured under controlled laboratory conditions: iii) structured to preclude bias due to non-production testing parameters. The results of the testing are suitable inputs to in-vehicle motor rating and performance characterization and as independently validated measurements for electric traction drives regardless of application (passenger vehicle, motorcycle, low speed EV, and others).
