Recommended standards for testing low-voltage storage batteries that are designed specifically for start-stop operations used in passenger vehicles, light trucks and other related vehicles.
Rationale: Recent advances in high-power Lithium-Ion (Li-Ion) battery technology has presented a new unique opportunity for developing an improved starter / storage energy storage system in place of the conventional vehicle battery (usually, lead-acid technology). This new battery technology provides a significant improvement on the performance (e.g., cranking power and extended period for accessory loads) and utilization (in both efficiency and physical size & weight), but yet creates a new set of challenges in terms of safety, design robustness and cost.
This document will focus on (1) product and functional definitions that describe the uniqueness and similarity of lithium-based technology versus conventional lead-acid, and (2) development of new test procedures for performance and life cycle evaluation to establish new baseline for future non-conventional storage technology.
