Rationale: Historically, battery testing is carried out to characterize performance characteristics like power capability as a function of state of charge. Nowadays there is great interest in using testing data to parameterize models that are useful for design of thermal systems. The use of battery test data for modeling is difficult because the test conditions are not well defined; for example, the boundary conditions used to test the battery, such as heat-transfer coefficient at the walls and the heat-transfer from the posts to the cables, are not characterized. If conditions for battery testing were better defined, then testing results, which are obtained by battery developers, could be used by OEMs to design modules and packs, which would lower costs and accelerate development of battery systems. The objective of this project would be to provide details of test conditions for standardized battery tests like power capability in order to generate data which could be used for modeling. The objective of this document is to provide guidance in testing for defining the boundary conditions experienced by a cell during a test.
