This document details one of the connections of the J-3105 document. The connections are referenced in the scope of the main document J-3105. J-3105-2 details the Vehicle-mounted Pantograph or the Bus-up connection. All the common requirements are defined in the main document and this document provides for the details of the connection.
This document covers the connection interface relevant requirements for an electric vehicle power transfer system using a conductive automated charging device based on a conventional rail vehicle pantograph design. In order to allow interoperability for on-road vehicles (in particular buses and coaches) one configuration is being described in this document. Other configurations may be used for non-standard applications (e.g. mining trucks or port vehicles).
Rationale: Conductive Automated Connection Devices solutions are attractive to heavy-duty applications where downtime resulting from charge operations need to be minimized and the operator prefers to make the connection without leaving the operator's seat. The existing SAE charging standards do not address conductive ACD charging solutions that serve to promote all day operation of high capacity electric vehicles. The Vehicle-mounted Pantograph is suitable for power transfer up to 600 kW with Level 1 and up 1.2 MW for Level 2. It is hands-free, vertically engaged, and is positioned on the roof of the vehicle.
