This document details one of the connections of the J-3105 document. The connections are referenced in the scope of the main document J-3105. J-3105-3 details the Enclosed Pin and Sleeve connection. All the common requirements are defined in the main document and this document provides for the details of the connection.
This document covers the main safety and interoperability relevant requirements for an electric vehicle power transfer system using a conductive automated charging device based on an enclosed pin and socket design. In order to allow interoperability for on-road vehicles (in particular buses and coaches) one configuration is being described in this document. Other configurations may be used for non-standard applications (e.g. mining trucks or port vehicles).
Rationale: The Enclosed Pin and Socket Connection Interface is suitable for power transfer from > 32 kW up to 1+ Megawatt. Both the pin and socket are fully touch protected from unintentional human contact in both a mated and unmated configuration and thereby can be safely positioned at any height from the bottom to the top of the vehicle. It is hands-free, horizontally engaged, and can be positioned on the front, rear or side of the vehicle. The efficiency is defined as having less than 25 mV voltage drop over the electrical contacts throughout the complete life of the contact elements of up to 100,000 mating cycles. It is configured to mechanically sequence the ground contact (first make last break), power contacts, and signal contacts including CP (last make first break) during both engagement and disengagement.
