Balance Weight and Rim Flange Design Specifications, Test Procedures, and Performance Recommendations for Heavy Vehicle Applications
This SAE Recommended Practice is intended to serve as a guide for standardization of features, dimensions, and configurations of balance weights for aluminum and steel wheels intended for use on Heavy Truck/Vehicles (Class 5-8) to assure good installation and retention of the balance weight. This document also provides test procedures and minimum performance requirements for testing balance weight retention.
Rationale: Light truck rim design has used SAE J1986 since it was issued in 1993. Heavy truck has not had any guideline or standardization for wheel balance weight retention or flange design and has led to some confusion and difficulties when customers attempt to perform work on the wheel end assembly. Creating a standard to govern balance weight retention should decrease field issues observed by wheel OE's.
