Test Methods and Equipment for Lighting Devices for Use on Vehicles Less than 2032 mm in Overall Width
This SAE Recommended Practice is intended as a guide toward standard practice and is subject to change to keep pace with experience and technical advances. This document provides standardized laboratory tests, test methods and equipment, and requirements for lighting devices covered by SAE Recommended Practices and Standards. It is intended for devices used on vehicles less than 2032 mm in width. Tests for vehicles larger than 2032 mm in overall width are covered in SAE J2139. Device specific tests and requirements can be found in applicable SAE technical reports.
A. Changed the requirement for Test Distance 188.8.131.52 to coincide with FMVSS requirements.
B. Water Spray test (4.9) is changed to offer a choice of a more representative test condition that causes water intrusion. Current water spray test (type A) is long in duration but the precipitation rate is extremely low. Even with open venting structures water intrusion result is unlikely due to the low spray pressure and low flow. A new test option (type B) has been added that reproduces conditions that can cause water intrusion on unsealed lamps. Sealed or hydrophobic lamps can still be tested to the water submersion test.
C. Allow for substitution of Portland cement in Dust Test (4.11) with ISO equivalent dust. The ISO dust is chemically neutral and will not absorb moisture or clump like Portland cement. ISO dust 12103-1 grade A3 was chosen for being nearly equivalent to Portland cement for particle size distribution. Also, a conflict in the dust chamber equipment dimension was corrected.
