Test Methods and Equipment for Lighting Devices for Use on Vehicles Less than 2032 mm in Overall Width
J575_202406
This SAE Recommended Practice is intended as a guide toward standard practice and is subject to change to keep pace with experience and technical advances. This document provides standardized laboratory tests, test methods and equipment, and requirements for lighting devices covered by SAE Recommended Practices and Standards. It is intended for devices used on vehicles less than 2032 mm in width. Tests for vehicles larger than 2032 mm in overall width are covered in SAE J2139. Device specific tests and requirements can be found in applicable SAE technical reports.
Rationale:
This document revision addresses the non-technology neutral aspects of the current humidity test of SAE J575 and adds a headlamp condensation test conforming more with today’s headlamp designs and test equipment. The current humidity test is no longer an industry best practice for capturing concerns regarding condensation inside headlamp assemblies. A number of different test methods have been developed by various parties in recent years, but none are perfect for capturing all possible market conditions. Generally, concerns with these tests fall into one or more of the following six categories.
1
Testing results are often inconsistent (not always repeatable).
2
Tests do not represent vehicle conditions.
3
Tests are not developed to consider diffusion of moisture.
4
Test procedures are skewed towards lamps with incandescent bulbs rather than LEDs or other light sources.
5
Lamp drying and moisture pre-conditioning is often not specified or controlled.
6
Acceptance criteria does not reflect actual warranty conditions seen in the market.
These are explained in more detail below.
As such, the task force has created and agreed upon a new, specific test method and criteria which blends best practices from the various tests used in industry today.
