SAE Counterfeit Parts Avoidance Programs Noted

SAE International's counterfeit parts mitigation efforts were recently highlighted in an article in Military Embedded Systems. In an article entitled "Best practices for COTS supplier counterfeit mitigation," writer Larry McHenry mentioned a number of relevant SAE standards and the work of the G-19 Counterfeit Electronic Parts Committee.

Writing that SAE is "leading the way in efforts to circumvent counterfeiting," McHenry, Senior Manager for Quality Assurance at Curtiss-Wright Defense Solutions, cited AS6174 ("Counterfeit Materiel; Assuring Acquisition of Authentic and Conforming Materiel") and AS5553B ("Counterfeit Electrical, Electronic, and Electromechanical (EEE) Parts; Avoidance, Detection, Mitigation, and Disposition") as critical to counterfeit prevention efforts.

The article also noted the Performance Review Institute's NADCAP (National Aerospace and Defense Contractors Accreditation Program) Counterfeit Avoidance Accreditation Program, which assesses compliance to AS5553.
