The SAE G20 Airport Lighting Committee was formed in 2010 to address the possible adverse impact to current Enhanced Flight Vision System (EFVS) operations by transitioning approach and airport surface lighting systems from incandescent lighting to Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs). The committee is evaluating possible new technology solutions and supporting an existing FAA IR-LED program. It is tasked to produce a feasibility report providing findings and recommendations for a satisfactory solution. The committee has meanwhile provided two interim reports to the FAA, the latest being July 2014. Currently, the committee is supporting the FAA on the implementation of visible LED’s into Approach and Runway lighting systems. This work should lead to field and flight testing of both visible and IR-LED’s combining the work of both areas and in line with the status of committee effort as of September 2014.
