This task force provides information and guidelines for verification and validation (V&V) of Automated Driving Systems (ADS). The levels of driving automation addressed by this task force include conditional (level 3), high (level 4), and full (level 5), as defined by SAE J3016 when engaged level 3-5 ADS features do not rely on a human driver for monitoring and responding to vehicle or traffic environment. The scope of this task force includes the (V&V) of all types of motor vehicles, including light-duty, passenger, truck and mult-purpose vehicles, as well as medium and heavy-duty trucks, buses, freight and transit vehicles. Various test procedures, such as those performed on a test track for verifying and validating ADS functions are included. This task force does not address component-level V&V on broader top-down systems-level V&V practices. SAE J3018 - Guidelines for Safe On-Road Testing of SAE Level 3, 4, and 5 Prototype Automated Driving Systems (ADS) was folded into V&V and provides general safety-relevant guidelines for performing tests of prototype ADSs equipped on test vehicles operated in mixed-traffic environments on public roads.
