Sizing of Emergency Braking Systems
The pupose of this SAE AIR is to provide guidelines for sizing stored energy systems in use in emergency braking systems, in light of their intended purpose and applicable certification regulations.
FAR/CS 25.735(h) includes sizing requirements for stored energy systems used in emergency braking systems. The regulation defines sizing criteria that are applicable if the stored energy system is used to demonstrate compliance to FAR/CS 25.735(b)(1), which requires the brake system to be designed so that in the event of any single failure, it is possible to bring the airplane to a complete stop within a braked roll stopping distance of not more than two times that obtained in determining the landing distance as prescribed in FAR/CS25.125. In the event the applicant statement of compliance is not supported by the use of a stored energy system, but nonetheless the stored energy system constitutes an integral part of the emergency braking system as it performs other essential functions, the criteria for its sizing in that case may differ from those defined by FAR/CS 25.735(h).
