Scope
This specification establishes the certification requirements for materials to be used in Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) or other material extrusion additive manufacturing production for aerospace components. This specification outlines the technical information, production guidelines and documentation requirements for FDM® material manufacturer. It will initially target several grades of PEI Copolymer (ULTEMTM 9085) and an enhance flow PEI (ULTEMTM 1010) materials as certified material examples.
Rationale
This standard is intended to provide the technical requirements, testing methodology, and quality assurance provisions for FDM materials needed to produce parts capable of service in critical and non-critical aerospace service. It will discuss critical material requirements such as moisture content, melt flow which have a substantial effect on the print quality and final print part properties. This procedure will establish a guidelines for approving new materials and how to accept equivalent materials to be used in FDM processes to create aerospace parts. No such document currently exists and such a document is needed to maintain high quality FDM produced structures.
