Introduction to batteries:

In this course, we will discuss how batteries fit into the energy context and explore different perspectives of current battery technologies. Then, we will take a look inside a battery to understand its main components. Finally, you will learn how to classify different battery technologies. Electrochemical concepts behind batteries:

In-depth knowledge on the thermodynamic aspects of battery operation and how they relate to common battery parameters. First, we will review the definition of a battery and its main elements from an electrochemical point of view and get to know the basic physical and chemical phenomena that are the basis for battery operation. Then, we will dive deeper into the thermodynamic properties of a battery cell, and learn more about the theoretical parameters and electrochemical phenomena that occur during battery operation. Finally, we will use the knowledge of thermodynamics and kinetics to describe the behavior of battery cells and learn about the different factors that affect the performance of a battery. Remember to keep in mind the main advantages and limitations of batteries for your application of interest.

Current Battery Technologies:

In this course, you will learn about the main properties, advantages and challenges of each battery type. Lectures will provide you with in-depth knowledge on the key characteristics and main applications of eight currently available technologies, starting with the widely used lithium-ion batteries present in most of our electronic devices. We will then explore the conventional lead-acid batteries present in ICE vehicles. We will go over the categories of primary and reserve batteries then finish up with an overview of flow batteries, sodium-beta batteries and nickel-based batteries.

Emerging Battery Technologies:

In this course, you will take a peek into the future to explore two important emerging battery technologies: metal-air batteries and solid-state batteries. Following the lectures, you will be able to understand the potentials and challenges behind these cutting-edge batteries.
