SAE Government Technologies President Brandon Card Appointed to New DoD Microelectronics Program Board

Troy, Mich. (December 11, 2023) – SAE Government Technologies™ (SAE GT) is pleased to announce that SAE GT President Brandon Card has been appointed as a board member for the Silicon Crossroads Microelectronics Commons (SCMC) Hub. The SCMC Hub enables next-generation microelectronics innovation by cultivating an unprecedented Midwestern ecosystem of diverse partners including academia, small business, federal labs, and prime defense contractors.

This new Department of Defense (DoD) program was awarded to SAE GT partner Applied Research Institute (ARI), which was recently designated as one of eight hubs supporting the DoD Microelectronics Commons program and will lead the SCMC Hub.  In addition to Brandon’s role on ARI’s SCMC board, SAE GT is also a member of the hub.

“I’m thrilled to be part of this regional effort for technology innovation,” Mr. Card said. “As part of the SAE ecosystem, I look forward to seeking opportunities related to standards, workforce development and transitioning prototype projects to dual-use commercialization.”

Six technology areas critical to the DoD mission were selected as focus areas for the Commons. Each Hub will be advancing U.S. technology leadership in one or more of these areas:

  • Secure Edge/Internet of Things (IoT) Computing

  • 5G/6G

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI) Hardware

  • Quantum Technology

  • Electromagnetic Warfare

  • Commercial Leap Ahead Technologies

The Microelectronics Commons Hubs are funded by the "Creating Helpful Incentives to Produce Semiconductors (CHIPS) and Science Act" of 2022.  With $2 billion in funding for fiscal years 2023 through 2027, the Hub’s program is expected to spur economic growth across their respective regions and the economy at large. Hubs are charged with developing the physical, digital, and human infrastructure needed to support future success in microelectronics research and development. This includes building education pipelines and retraining initiatives to ensure the United States has the talent pool needed to sustain these investments.

A Silicon Crossroads Hub Reception and the Inaugural Microelectronics Commons Annual Meeting was held the week of October 16 in Washington, D.C. Learn more about the regional hubs announcement here.
