Assessing the Effects of Computational Model Parameters on Aerodynamic Noise Characteristics of a Heavy-Duty Diesel Engine Turbocharger Compressor at Full Operating Conditions

In recent years, with the development of computing infrastructure and methods, the potential of numerical methods to reasonably predict aerodynamic noise in turbocharger compressors of heavy-duty diesel engines has increased. However, aerodynamic acoustic modeling of complex geometries and flow systems is currently immature, mainly due to the greater challenges in accurately characterizing turbulent viscous flows. Therefore, recent advances in aerodynamic noise calculations for automotive turbocharger compressors were reviewed and a quantitative study of the effects for turbulence models (Shear-Stress Transport (SST) and Detached Eddy Simulation (DES)) and time-steps (2° and 4°) in numerical simulations on the performance and acoustic prediction of a compressor under various conditions were investigated.

Measurement and Modeling for Creep Groan of a Drum Brake in Trucks

An experiment is carried out to measure creep groan of a drum brake located in a trailer axle of a truck. The noise nearby the drum brake and accelerations on brake shoes, axle and trailer frame are collected to analyze the occurring conditions and characteristics of the creep groan. A multi-body dynamics model with 1/4 trailer chassis structures is established for analyzing brake component vibrations that generates the creep groan. In the model, the contact force between brake cam and brake shoes, the contact friction characteristics between brake linings and inner circular surface of brake drum, and the properties of chassis structure are included. Dynamic responses of brake shoes, axle and trailer frame during the braking process are estimated using the established model and the responses are compared with the measured results, which validate the model.

Damping Force Optimal Control Strategy for Semi-Active Suspension System

Semi-active suspension system (SASS) could enhance the ride comfort of the vehicle across different operating conditions through adjusting damping characteristics. However, current SASS are often calibrated based on engineering experience when selecting parameters for its controller, which complicates the achievement of optimal performance and leads to a decline in ride comfort for the vehicle being controlled. Linear quadratic constrained optimal control is a crucial tool for enhancing the performance of semi-active suspensions. It considers various performance objectives, such as ride comfort, handling stability, and driving safety. This study presents a control strategy for determining optimal damping force in SASS to enhance driving comfort. First, we analyze the working principle of the SASS and construct a seven-degree-of-freedom model.

Energy Dissipation Characteristics Analysis of Automotive Vibration PID Control Based on Adaptive Differential Evolution Algorithm

To address the issue of PID control for automotive vibration, this paper supplements and develops the evaluation of automotive vibration characteristics, and proposes a vibration response quantity for evaluating the energy dissipation characteristics of automotive vibration. A two-degree-of-freedom single wheel model for automotive vibration control is established, and the conventional vibration response variables for ride comfort evaluation and the energy consumption vibration response variables for energy dissipation characteristics evaluation are determined. This paper uses the Adaptive Differential Evolution (ADE) algorithm to tune the PID control parameters and introduces an adaptive mutation factor to improve the algorithm's adaptability. Several commonly used adaptive mutation factors are summarized in this paper, and their effects on algorithm improvement are compared.

Vibration Control of MR-Damped Half Truck Suspension System Using Proportional Integral Derivative Controller Tuned by Ant Colony Optimization

Proportional integral derivative (PID) control technique is a famous and cost-effective control strategy, in real implementation, applied in various engineering applications. Also, the ant colony optimization (ACO) algorithm is extensively applied in various industrial problems. This paper addresses the usage of the ACO algorithm to tune the PID controller gains for a semi-active heavy vehicle suspension system integrated with cabin and seat. The magnetorheological (MR) damper is used in main suspension as a semi-active device to enhance the ride comfort and vehicle stability. The proposed semi-active suspension consists of a system controller that calculate the desired damping force using a PID controller tuned using ACO, and a continuous state damper controller that predict the input voltage that is required to track the desired damping force.

An Adaptive Clamping Force Control Strategy for Electro-Mechanical Brake System Considering Nonlinear Friction Resistance

The Electronic Mechanical Braking (EMB) system, which offers advantages such as no liquid medium and complete decoupling, can meet the high-quality active braking and high-intensity regenerative braking demands proposed by intelligent vehicles and is considered one of the ideal platforms for future chassis. However, traditional control strategies with fixed clamping force tracking parameters struggle to maintain high-quality braking performance of EMB under variable braking requests, and the nonlinear friction between mechanical components also affects the accuracy of clamping force control. Therefore, this paper presents an adaptive clamping force control strategy for the EMB system, taking into account the resistance of nonlinear friction. First, an EMB model is established as the simulation and control object, which includes the motor model, transmission model, torque balance model, stiffness model, and friction model.

Modeling and Experimental Testing Analysis of Static and Dynamic Characteristics of Air Springs

In order to study the effects of different factors on the static and dynamic characteristics of air springs, three models were established to calculate the static and dynamic characteristics of air springs, including modeling at the design position, modeling only considering the straight state, and modeling considering the thickness of the bellows in the straight state. Static stiffness of air springs is calculated using three different models and are compared with experiments. In the straight state model considering the thickness of the bellow, the influence of aluminum tube and bellows thickness on the static stiffness are considered, and the modeling with the straight state solved the problem of the change in cord angle after the air spring was inflated and expanded. The established model is then used to calculate static and dynamic characteristics of air springs, such as static stiffness, hysteresis loop, and dynamic stiffness.

Modeling and Time Discrete Characteristics Analysis of the Oil Filling Process of Wet Clutch for a Specialized Vehicle’s Automatic Transmission

The automatic transmission of a specialized vehicle encountered challenges in achieving stable oil filling time due to the considerable variability of related parameters and the non-linear trends in the variation of individual product parameters over time. To investigate the underlying causes of this phenomenon and enhance the oil filling efficiency, a detailed model of the clutch oil filling process during gear shifting was established in this paper, which included dynamic models of the key components such as the hydraulic system, clutch, proportional valve, and oil passages. Physical experiments were performed on the test bench to compare with the simulation results. The results showed that the correlation between the simulation model and the test bench was well, which verified the effectiveness of the simulation model.

Road Profile Reconstruction Based on Recurrent Neural Network Embedded with Attention Mechanism

Recognizing road conditions using onboard sensors is significant for the performance of intelligent vehicles, and the road profile is a widely accepted representation both in the temporal and frequency domains, greatly influencing driving quality. In this paper, a recurrent neural network embedded with attention mechanisms is proposed to reconstruct the road profile sequence. Firstly, the road and vehicle sensor signals are obtained in a simulated environment by modeling the road, tire, and vehicle dynamic system. After that, the models under different working conditions are trained and tested using the collected data, and the attention weights of the trained model are then visualized to optimize the input channels. Finally, field experiments on the real vehicle are conducted to collect real road profile data, combined with vehicle system simulation, to verify the performance of the proposed method.

Analysis and Design of Suspension State Observer for Wheel Load Estimation

Tire forces and moments play an important role in vehicle dynamics and safety. X-by-wire chassis components including active suspension, electronic powered steering, by-wire braking, etc can take the tire forces as inputs to improve vehicle’s dynamic performance. In order to measure the accurate dynamic wheel load, most of the researches focused on the kinematic parameters such as body longitudinal and lateral acceleration, load transfer and etc. In this paper, the authors focus on the suspension system, avoiding the dependence on accurate mass and aerodynamics model of the whole vehicle. The geometry of the suspension is equated by the spatial parallel mechanism model (RSSR model), which improves the calculation speed while ensuring the accuracy. A suspension force observer is created, which contains parameters including spring damper compression length, push rod force, knuckle accelerations, etc., combing the kinematic and dynamic characteristic of the vehicle.

A Dynamic Model for the Rolling Resistance Considering Thermal States and Conditions

Planning for charging in transport missions is vital when commercial long-haul vehicles are to be electrified. In this planning, accurate range prediction is essential so the trucks reach their destinations as planned. The rolling resistance significantly influences truck energy consumption, often considered a simple constant or a function of vehicle speed only. This is, however, a gross simplification, especially as the tire temperature has a significant impact. At 80 km/h, a cold tire can have three times higher rolling resistance than a warm tire. A temperature-dependent rolling resistance model is proposed. The model is based on thermal networks for the temperature at four places around the tire. The model is tuned and validated using rolling resistance, tire shoulder, and tire apex temperature measurements with a truck in a climate wind tunnel with ambient temperatures ranging from -30 to 25 °C at an 80 km/h constant speed.

Research on the Control Strategy of Electric Vehicle Active Suspension Based on Fuzzy Theory

The performance of suspension system has a direct impact on the riding comfort and smoothness. For the traditional suspension can not effectively alleviate the impact of road surface and the poor anti-vibration performance, The dynamics model of vehicle suspension system is established, and the control model of vehicle four-degree-of-freedom active suspension is designed with fuzzy control strategy. On this basis, a comprehensive simulation model of the control model of vehicle active suspension coupled with road excitation is established. and the ride comfort of vehicles under different types of suspension are tested through Simulink. The simulation results show that compared with the passive suspension, the reduction of vehicle acceleration and dynamic deformation of the active suspension controlled by fuzzy PID can reach 33.76% and 22.45%. and the reduction of pitch Angle speed and dynamic load of the active suspension controlled by fuzzy PID can reach 16.18% and 10.72%.

Ride Comfort Enhancement of Railway Vehicles Using Magnetorheological Damper

The study investigates the ride comfort of a rail vehicle with semi-active suspension control and its effect on train vertical dynamics. The Harmony Search algorithm optimizes the gains of a proportional integral derivative (PID) controller using the self-adaptive global best harmony search method (SGHS) due to its effectiveness in reducing the tuning time and offering the least objective function value. Magnetorheological (MR) dampers are highly valuable semi-active devices for vibration control applications rather than active actuators in terms of reliability and implementation cost. A quarter-rail vehicle model consisting of six degrees of freedom (6-DOF) is simulated using MATLAB/Simulink software to evaluate the proposed controller's effectiveness. The simulated results show that the optimized PID significantly improves ride comfort compared to passive.

Tire Force Estimation Using Intelligent Tire System Detecting Carcass Deformation

In this paper, an intelligent tire system is designed to estimate tire force by detecting the tire carcass deformation. The intelligent tire system includes a set of marker points on the inner liner of the tire to locate the position of tire carcass and a camera mounted on the rim to capture the position of these points under different driving conditions. An image recognition program is used to identify the coordinates of the marker points in order to determine the deformation of the tire carcass. According to the tire carcass stiffness test and the general tire carcass deformation theory, an approximate linear relationship between tire force and carcass deformation in all directions was obtained. The vertical force of the tire is determined by the distance between adjacent marker points. The longitudinal force and lateral force of the tire are estimated by measuring the longitudinal and lateral displacements of the marker points.

A Path Tracking Method for an Unmanned Bicycle Based on the Body-Fixed Coordinate Frame

The present study introduces a novel approach for achieving path tracking of an unmanned bicycle in its local body-fixed coordinate frame. A bicycle is generally recognized as a multibody system consisting of four distinct rigid bodies, namely the front wheel, the front fork, the body frame, and the rear wheel. In contrast to most previous studies, the relationship between a tire and the road is now considered in terms of tire forces rather than nonholonomic constraints. The body frame has six degrees of freedom, while the rear wheel and front fork each have one degree of freedom relative to the body frame. The front wheel exhibits a single degree of freedom relative to the front fork. A bicycle has a total of nine degrees of freedom.

Tyre Slip Ratio Estimation Using Intelligent Tyre Concept

Intelligent tyres can offer crucial insights into tyre dynamics, serving as a fundamental information source for vehicle state estimation and thereby enabling vehicular safety control. Among the numerous tyre parameters, slip ratio stands out as a direct influencer of vehicle motion characteristics. Accurate estimation of tyre slip ratio is essential for vehicle safety. Firstly, an analysis of the fundamental composition of tyres was conducted, and appropriate simplifications were applied to the tyre structure. Additionally, a finite element model of the tyre was constructed using ABAQUS software. To validate the reliability of the model, a real vehicle testing system was established, consisting of the experimental vehicle, data acquisition system, and supervisory computer. The reliability of the finite element model was confirmed by assessing the consistency of acceleration signals in three different directions of the tyre.

Modeling and Validation of the Tire Friction on Wet Road

In order to study the tire friction characteristics under wet skid surface, the “pseudo” hydrodynamic pressure bearing effect is used to be equivalent to the hydrodynamics of water film, and an advanced Lugre tire hydroplaning dynamic model is developed by combining the arbitrary pressure distribution function. The water hydroplaning dynamic tests were carried out for 285/70R19.5 tire under wet of different water film thickness and dry conditions, and the parameters of the advanced Lugre tire dynamic model were identified. The results show that the tire water-skiing model proposed in this paper can effectively simulate the friction characteristics of tires under different water film thicknesses. Under dry conditions, 0.5mm water film and 1mm water film road conditions, the relative errors of the maximum tire friction coefficient between the tested and advanced Lugre tire model are 1.11%, 0.12% and 0.16%, respectively.

Vehicle Drop Test Correlation for Two-Wheeler (Motorcycle) Using Multibody Simulation

Off-roading is the scenario of driving a vehicle on unpaved surfaces such as sand, gravel, riverbeds, rocks, and other natural terrain. Vehicle designed for that purpose requires jumping from height due to uneven surfaces/patches. This also requires them to sustain a high amount of loads acting upon them on impact. Thus, off-roading vehicles should not only provide intended vehicle dynamics performance but at the same time should be durable as well. Drop test which is done in a controlled environment is a widely used method to validate the durability of vehicle in such scenarios wherein the vehicle is dropped from a certain predefined height. In Multibody dynamics simulation, drop test was replicated and acceleration data computed at different locations in the vehicle were correlated with actual physical test data. Correlation was done for different drop heights. This paper presents relevant details of the virtual vehicle modeling, loadcase, test data & subsequent correlation.

Analysis of Intrinsic Characteristics and Dynamic Response of New Energy Vehicle Battery Pack System

As the main power source of new energy vehicles, the durability and fatigue characteristics of the battery pack directly affect the performance of the vehicle. The battery pack system was modelled using multi-body dynamics software, with 7 and 13 degree of freedom models developed. Using the established model, the intrinsic properties of the battery pack are computationally analyzed. To calculate the dynamic characteristics, a sinusoidal displacement excitation is applied to the wheel centre of mass, and the displacement and acceleration of the battery pack centre of mass are calculated for both models.The displacement and acceleration curves at the centre of mass of the battery pack of the two models are compared. The results show that the amplitude of the displacement and acceleration curves at the centre of mass of the 13 degrees of freedom model of the battery pack has decreased significantly.
