Towards Design of Sustainable Smart Mobility Services through a Cloud Platform

2020-04-14
2020-01-1048
We propose a GHG data analytics framework that functions on top of a cloud platform to provide unique system-level perspectives on operating transportation services, from procuring the most environmentally and people friendly vehicles to scheduling and designing the services based on data insights. ...Using a benchmark problem with real-world vehicle and mobile device data, we demonstrate the functionality of our GHG analytics framework.

An Extended-Range Electric Vehicle Control Strategy for Reducing Petroleum Energy Use and Well-to-Wheel Greenhouse Gas Emissions

2011-04-12
2011-01-0915
The challenge involves designing a crossover SUV powertrain to reduce fuel consumption, petroleum energy use and well-to-wheels (WTW) greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In order to interface with and control the vehicle, the team added a National Instruments (NI) CompactRIO (cRIO) to act as a hybrid vehicle supervisory controller (HVSC). ...This paper will detail the high-level control strategy decision making structure, and how this control strategy, implemented in the VTREX vehicle, allows the team to achieve its goal of reducing petroleum energy use by at least 80% and GHG emissions by at least 30%. Real-world vehicle testing data is presented in support of the research.

Analytical Evaluation of Propulsion System Architectures for Future Urban Vehicles

2011-04-12
2011-01-0861
As the world population continues to migrate to urban areas for increased economic opportunities, addressing personal mobility challenges such as air pollution, Greenhouse Gases (GHGs) and traffic congestion in these regions will become even a greater challenge especially in rapidly growing nations. ...However, the technological advancements made so far alone will not be able to mitigate the issues due to increasing GHGs and air pollution in urban areas. Electrification of propulsion systems may play a significant role in overcoming the challenges associated with personal urban mobility. ...Strengths and weaknesses of different designs are assessed relative to conventional propulsion systems on the basis of metrics such as well-to-wheel energy conversion efficiency, GHG emissions and vehicle functionality.

Considerations of Life Cycle Assessment and the Estimate of Carbon Footprint of Powertrains

2020-11-30
2020-32-2314
Legislative regulations and international agreements like the Paris Agreement have been prepared to enforce the effort to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs). Greater environmental awareness among customers and introduction of strict environmental regulations have challenged designers to consider the environmental impact of products together with traditional design objectives in the early stages of product design.
