During the first year of the competition, the goal of the WVU EcoEvolution Team was to design a novel hybrid-electric powertrain for a 2009 Saturn Vue to increase pump-to-wheels fuel economy, reduce criteria tailpipe emissions and well-to-wheels greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) while maintaining or improving performance and utility. To this end, WVU designed a 2-Mode split-parallel diesel-electric hybrid system.

Exhaust Gas Analysis of Various Potential GHG-Neutral Synthetic Fuels and Gasoline/Alkylate-Blends Including Variable Injection Timings

The exhaust gas composition of several potential greenhouse gas neutral C1-based synthetic fuels and gasoline/alkylate-blends are compared to each other and benchmarked against gasoline. The search for sustainable alternatives to conventional fossil fuels is still ongoing. Ideally, the exhaust gas of such an alternative should not deteriorate the environment’s air quality. The testing conducted here is focused on automotive application. However, promising fuel candidates could also be used elsewhere. The gasoline/alkylate blends investigated contain various percentages of dimethyl carbonate (DMC) or methyl formate (MeFo). Various methanol-MeFo mixtures as well as a 65 vol% DMC+ 35 vol% MeFo mixture are investigated as examples for a pure synthetic fuel. The tests are carried out on a single-cylinder spark ignition research engine.

It also includes hydrocarbon species and specific NOx species production over aftertreatment devices as a result of changes in fuel specification and the inclusion of bio-derived components and consideration of secondary emissions production (slip) as a result of aftertreatment.

The formation of these salts can reduce the availability of NH3 for NOx conversion, block active catalyst sites, and result in the formation of N2O, a regulated Greenhouse Gas (GHG). In this study, we investigate the effect of hydrothermal aging on the formation and decomposition of ammonium nitrate on a state-of-the-art Cu/zeolite selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst.
