Reduced order model for modal analysis of electric motors considering material and dimensional variations

With the electrification of the automotive industry, electric motors have emerged as pivotal components. A profound understanding of their vibrational behaviour stands as a cornerstone for guaranteeing not only the optimal performance and reliability of vehicles in terms of noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH), but also the overall driving experience. The use of conventional finite element analysis (FEA) techniques for identification of the natural frequencies characteristics of electric motors often imposes significant computational loads, particularly when accurate material and geometrical properties and wider frequency ranges are considered. On the other hand, traditional reduced order vibroacoustic methodologies utilising simplified 2D representations, introduce several assumptions regarding boundary conditions and properties, leading to sacrifices in the accuracy of the results.

Metrics based design of electromechanical coupled reduced order model of an electric powertrain for NVH assessment

Electric vehicles offer cleaner transportation with lower emissions, thus their increased popularity. Although, electric powertrains contribute to quieter vehicles, the shift from internal combustion engines to electric powertrains presents new Noise, Vibration, and Harshness challenges. Unlike traditional engines, electric powertrains produce distinctive tonal noise, notably from motor whistles and gear whine. These tonal components have frequency content, sometimes above 10 kHz. Furthermore, the housing of the powertrain is the interface between the excitation from the driveline via the bearings and the radiated noise (NVH). Acoustic features of the radiated noise can be predicted by utilising the transmitted forces from the bearings. Due to tonal components at higher frequencies and dense modal content, full flexible multibody dynamics simulations are computationally expensive.

Performance Parity Study of Electrified Class 8 Semi Trucks with Diesel Counterparts

It is recognized that the heavier vehicles, the more emissions, thus the more imperative to electrify. In this study, long haul heavy-duty trucks are referred as HDTs, which are recognized as one of the hard-to-electrify vehicle segments, though the automotive industry has gained trending advantages of electrifying both light-duty cars and SUVs. Since big rigs such as Class 8 HDTs have significant road-block challenges for electrification due to the demanding long-hour work cycles in all weathers, this study focuses on quantifying those electrification challenges by taking advantage of the public data of Class 8 tractors & trailers. Tesla Semi is the research target though its vehicle spec data is sorted out with fragmentary information in the public domain. The key task is to analyze the battery capacity requirements due to environmental temperature and inherent aging over the lifespan.

Comparison of Neural Network Topologies for Sensor Virtualisation in BEV Thermal Management

Energy management of battery electric vehicle (BEV) is a very important and complex multi-system optimisation problem. The thermal energy management of a BEV plays a crucial role in consistent efficiency and performance of vehicle in all weather conditions. But in order to manage the thermal management, it requires a significant number of temperature sensors throughout the car including high voltage batteries, thus increasing the cost, complexity and weight of the car. Virtual sensors can replace physical sensors with a data-driven, physical relation-driven or machine learning-based prediction approach. This paper presents a framework for the development of a neural network virtual sensor using a thermal system hardware-in-the-loop test rig as the target system. The various neural network topologies, including RNN, LSTM, GRU, and CNN, are evaluated to determine the most effective approach.

Energy-Efficient and Context-Aware Computing in Software-Defined Vehicles for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)

The rise of Software-Defined Vehicles (SDV) has rapidly advanced the development of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), Autonomous Vehicle (AV), and Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) technology. While AVs need power to compute data from perception to controls, BEVs need the efficiency to optimize their electric driving range and stand out compared to traditional Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles. AVs possess certain shortcomings in the current world, but SAE Level 2+ (L2+) Automated Vehicles are the focus of all major Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). The most common form of an SDV today is the amalgamation of AV and BEV technology on the same platform which is prominently available in most OEM’s lineups. As the compute and sensing architectures for L2+ automated vehicles lean towards a computationally expensive centralized design, it may hamper the most important purchasing factor of a BEV, the electric driving range.

A Naturalistic Driving Study for Lane Change Detection and Personalization

Driver Assistance and Autonomous Driving features are becoming nearly ubiquitous in new vehicles. The intent of the Driver Assistant features is to assist the driver in making safer decisions. The intent of Autonomous Driving features is to execute vehicle maneuvers, without human intervention, in a safe manner. The overall goal of Driver Assistance and Autonomous Driving features is to reduce accidents, injuries, and deaths with a comforting driving experience. However, different drivers can react differently to advanced automated driving technology. It is therefore important to consider and improve the adaptability of these advances based on driver behavior. In this paper, a human-centric approach is adopted to provide an enriching driving experience. We perform data analysis of the naturalistic behavior of drivers when performing lane change maneuvers by extracting features from extensive Second Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP2) data of over 5,400,000 data files.

Thermal Management System Test Bench for Electric Vehicle Technology

The importance of designing and sizing a thermal management system for electric vehicle powertrains cannot be overstated. Traditional approaches often rely on model-based system design using supplier reference component data, which can inadvertently lead to undisclosed errors arising from the interactions between the components and the environment. This paper introduces a novel test facility for battery electric vehicle thermal management technology, which has been designed for neural network virtual sensor and non-linear multi-in multi-out control development. The paper demonstrates how a digital twin of the test bench can used to support the development of such technology. Additionally, this paper presents preliminary results from the test bench revealing insights into the performance and interactions of key components. For instance, there is an observed 30% reduction in the maximum flow rate of the pump integrated into the test bench compared to the specified value.

Vibration Characteristics and Control Algorithms for Semi-Active Suspension of Space Exploration Vehicles

Suspension systems are an integral part of land vehicles and contribute significantly to the vehicle performance in terms of its ride comfort and road holding characteristics. In the case of Space Exploration Vehicles (SEVs), the requirement of these unmanned vehicles is to rove, collect pictures and transmit data back to the earth. This is generally performed with the help of exteroceptive, and proprioceptive sensors mounted on the main chassis of the SEV. The design of various components of such vehicles is dictated by the assumption of extreme terrain and environmental conditions that it might face. The Mars Exploration Rovers (MERs) have incorporated the use of the “Rocker-Bogie” mechanism for the suspension system which provides relative stability to the MER for various maneuvers. In this work, the “Rocker-Bogie” mechanism is modeled and simulated as a planar kinematic model using parameters of the Perseverance rover.

Energy Modeling of Deceleration Strategies for Electric Vehicles

Rapid adoption of battery electric vehicles means improving the energy consumption and energy efficiency of these new vehicles is a top priority. One method of accomplishing this is regenerative braking, which converts kinetic energy to electrical energy stored in the battery pack while the vehicle is decelerating. Coasting is an alternative strategy that minimizes energy consumption by decelerating the vehicle using only road load. A battery electric vehicle model is refined to assess regenerative braking, coasting, and other deceleration strategies. A road load model based on public test data calculates tractive effort requirements based on speed and acceleration. Bidirectional Willans lines are the basis of a powertrain model simulating battery energy consumption. Vehicle tractive and powertrain power are modeled backward from prescribed linear velocity curves, and the coasting trajectory is forward modeled given zero tractive power.

Real Time Bearing Defect Classification Using Time Domain Analysis and Deep Learning Algorithms

Structural Health Monitoring (SHM), especially in the field of rotary machinery diagnosis, plays a crucial role in determining the defect category as well as its intensity in a machine element. This paper proposes a new framework for real-time classification of structural defects in a roller bearing test rig using time domain-based classification algorithms. Along with the bearing defects, the effect of eccentric shaft loading has also been analyzed. The entire system comprises of three modules: sensor module – using accelerometers for data collection, data processing module – using time-domain based signal processing algorithms for feature extraction, and classification module – comprising of deep learning algorithms for classifying between different structural defects occurring within the inner and outer race of the bearing.

Quantitative Multi-Physics Tools for Automotive Wiper Design

The primary function of automotive windscreen wipers is to remove excess water and debris to secure a clear view for the driver. Their successful operation is imperative to vehicle occupants’ safety. To avoid reliance on experimental testing there is a need to develop physics-based models that can quantify the effects of design-based decisions on automotive wipers. This work presents a suite of evaluative tools that can provide quantitative data on the effects of design decisions. We analyse the complex non-linear contact interaction between the wiper blade and the automotive screen using finite element analysis, assessing the impact of blade geometry on the contact distribution. The influence of the evolution of normal applied load by the wiper arm is also investigated as to how it impacts the contact distribution evolution. The dynamics of the blade are subsequently analysed using a multiple connected mass spring damper system.

Electric Vehicle Smart Charging Considering Fluctuating Electrical Grid Pricing and Extreme Weather

As lithium-ion electric vehicle (EV) batteries are sensitive to the conditions they are exposed to during charging and discharging, operational control has been an important research area. While an understanding of the effects current load and operation temperature has on the ageing stability of a battery has been established, associated control strategies are yet to be fully optimized. Most battery charging studies utilize controlled ambient temperatures and basic defined cycles, which may only apply to a small subset of real-world EV consumers. This leads to control strategies that do not consider electrical grid price fluctuation, user driving habits or local weather conditions. This paper looks to propose improved smart charging strategies of EVs to reduce consumer costs while also increasing the battery longevity. To accomplish the primary objective, A model has been generated that simulates the standard charge cycle of a battery.

Interconnected Roll Stability Control System for Semitrucks with Double Trailers

This paper provides a simulation analysis of a novel interconnected roll stability control (RSC) system for improving the roll stability of semitrucks with double trailers. Different from conventional RSC systems where each trailer’s RSC module operates independently, the studied interconnected RSC system allows the two trailers’ RSC systems to communicate with each other. As such, if one trailer’s RSC activates, the other one is also activated to assist in further scrubbing speed or intervening sooner. Simulations are performed using a multi-body vehicle dynamics model that is developed in TruckSim® and coupled with the RSC model established in Simulink®. The dynamic model is validated using track test data. The simulation results for a ramp steer maneuver (RSM) and sine-with-dwell (SWD) maneuver indicate that the proposed RSC system reduces lateral acceleration and rollover index for both trailers, decreasing the likelihood of wheel tip-up and vehicle rollover.

Development and Testing of a Hybrid Vehicle Energy Management Strategy

An energy management strategy for a prototype P4 parallel hybrid Chevrolet Blazer is developed for the EcoCAR Mobility Challenge. The objective of the energy management strategy is to reduce energy consumption while maintaining the drive quality targets of a conventional vehicle. A comprehensive model of the hybrid powertrain and vehicle physics is constructed to aid in the development of the control strategy. To improve fuel efficiency, a Willans line model is developed for the conventional powertrain and used to develop a rule-based torque split strategy. The strategy maximizes high efficiency engine operation while reducing round trip losses. Calibratable parameters for the torque split operating regions allow for battery state of charge management. Torque request and filtering algorithms are also developed to ensure the hybrid powertrain can smoothly and reliably meet driver demand.

Unified Net Willans Line Model for Estimating the Energy Consumption of Battery Electric Vehicles

Due to increased urgency regarding environmental concerns within the transportation industry, sustainable solutions for combating climate change are in high demand. One solution is a widespread transition from internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs) to battery electric vehicles (BEVs). To facilitate this transition, reliable energy consumption modeling is desired for providing quick, high-level estimations for a BEV without requiring extensive vehicle and computational resources. Therefore, the goal of this paper is to create a simple, yet reliable vehicle model, that can estimate the energy consumption of most electric vehicles on the market by using parameter normalization techniques. These vehicle parameters include the vehicle test weight and performance to obtain a unified net Willans line to describe the input/output power using a linear relationship.

Vortex Drag Revisited

Some car shapes produce a substantial drag component from the generation of trailing vortices. This vortex (or lift dependent) drag is difficult to quantify for the whole vehicle, for reasons that are discussed. It has previously been shown that vortex drag may be assessed for some car features by consideration of the relationship between changes in drag and lift. In this paper this relationship is explored for some different vehicle shape characteristics, which produce positive and negative lift changes, and their combinations. Vortex drag factors are determined and vortex drag coefficients considered. An interference effect is identified between some of these features. For the simple bodies investigated the vortex drag contribution can be considerable.

Experimental Analysis of Spray Topology in the Wake of an Automotive Body

Advanced driver assistance systems rely on external sensors that encompass the vehicle. The reliability of such systems can be compromised by adverse weather, with performance hindered by both direct impingement on sensors and spray suspended between the vehicle and potential obstacles. The transportation of road spray is known to be an unsteady phenomenon, driven by the turbulent structures that characterise automotive flow fields. Further understanding of this unsteadiness is a key aspect in the development of robust sensor implementations. This paper outlines an experimental method used to analyse the spray ejected by an automotive body, presented through a study of a simplified vehicle model with interchangeable rear-end geometries. Particles are illuminated by laser light sheets as they pass through measurement planes downstream of the vehicle, facilitating imaging of the instantaneous structure of the spray.

5G Network Connectivity Automated Test and Verification for Autonomous Vehicles Using UAVs

The significance and the number of vehicle safety features enabled via connectivity continue to increase. OnStar, with its automatic airbag notification, was one of the first vehicle safety features that demonstrate the enhanced safety benefits of connectivity. Vehicle connectivity benefits have grown to include remote software updates, data analytics to aid with preventative maintenance and even to theft prevention and recovery. All of these services require available and reliable connectivity. However, except for the airbag notification, none have strict latency requirements. For example, software updates can generally be postponed till reliable connectivity is available. Data required for prognostic use cases can be stored and transmitted at a later time. A new set of use cases are emerging that do demand continuous, reliable and low latency connectivity. For example, remote control of autonomous vehicles may be required in unique situations.

Development of a Willans Line Rule-Based Hybrid Energy Management Strategy

The pre-prototype development of a simulated rule-based hybrid energy management strategy for a 2019 Chevrolet Blazer RS converted parallel P4 full hybrid is presented. A vehicle simulation model is developed using component bench data and validated using EPA-reported dynamometer fuel economy test data. A combined Willans line model is proposed for the engine and transmission, with hybrid control rules based on efficiency-derived engine power thresholds. Algorithms are proposed for battery state of charge (SOC) management including engine loading and one pedal strategies, with battery SOC maintained within 20% to 80% safe limits and charge balanced behavior achieved. The simulated rule-based hybrid control strategy for the hybrid vehicle has an energy consumption reduction of 20% for the Hot 505, 3.6% for the HwFET, and 12% for the US06 compared to the stock vehicle.

An Input Linearized Powertrain Model for the Optimal Control of Hybrid Electric Vehicles

Models of hybrid powertrains are used to establish the best combination of conventional engine power and electric motor power for the current driving situation. The model is characteristic for having two control inputs and one output constraint: the total torque should be equal to the torque requested by the driver. To eliminate the constraint, several alternative formulations are used, considering engine power or motor power or even the ratio between them as a single control input. From this input and the constraint, both power levels can be deduced. There are different popular choices for this one control input. This paper presents a novel model based on an input linearizing transformation. It is demonstrably superior to alternative model forms, in that the core dynamics of the model (battery state of energy) are linear, and the non-linearities of the model are pushed into the inputs and outputs in a Wiener/Hammerstein form.
