The scope of this SAE Recommended Practice is to provide a uniform practice for the testing of small engine powered alternating current generator sets. The small engines addressed are the reciprocating piston type of 14.9 kw (20 BHP) or less.

Mounting flanges and power take-off shafts are divided into two main categories: those for horizontal crankshaft engines and those for vertical crankshaft engines. This recommended practice applies to engines of less than 6-bhp rating, of both 4 cycle and 2 cycle designs.
