On-Center Steering Model for Realistic Steering Feel based on Real Measurement Data

Driving simulators allow the testing of driving functions, vehicle models and acceptance assessment at an early stage. For a real driving experience, it's necessary that all immersions are depicted as realistically as possible. When driving manually, the perceived haptic steering wheel torque plays a key role in conveying a realistic steering feel. To ensure this, complex multi-body systems are used with numerous of parameters that are difficult to identify. Therefore, this study shows a method how to generate a realistic steering feel with a nonlinear open-loop model which only contains significant parameters, particularly the friction of the steering gear. This is suitable for the steering feel in the most driving on-center area. Measurements from test benches and real test drives with an Electric Power Steering (EPS) were used for the Identification and Validation of the model.

Traceability E-Fuels 2035

EU legislation provides for only local CO2 emission-free vehicles to be allowed in individual passenger transport by 2035. In addition, the directive provides for fuels from renewable sources, i.e. defossilised fuels. This development leads to three possible energy sources or forms of energy for use in individual transport. The first possibility is charging with electricity generated from renewable sources, the second possibility is hydrogen generated from renewable sources or blue production path. The third possibility is the use of renewable fuels, also called e-fuels. These fuels are produced from atmospheric CO2 and renewable hydrogen. Possible processes for this are, for example, methanol or Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. The production of these fuels is very energy-intensive and large amounts of renewable electricity are needed.

Post-Oxidation Phenomena as a Thermal Management Strategy for Automotive After-Treatment Systems: Assessment by Means of 3D-CFD Virtual Development

The target of the upcoming automotive emission regulations is to promote a fast transition to near-zero emission vehicles. As such, the range of ambient and operating conditions tested in the homologation cycles is broadening. In this context, the proposed work aims to thoroughly investigate the potential of post-oxidation phenomena in reducing the light-off time of a conventional three-way catalyst. The study is carried out on a turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline engine by means of experimental and numerical activities. Post oxidation is achieved through the oxidation of unburned fuel in the exhaust line, exploiting a rich combustion and a secondary air injection dedicated strategy. The CFD methodology consists of two different approaches: the former relies on a full-engine mesh, the latter on a detailed analysis of the chemical reactions occurring in the exhaust line.

Experimental Investigation of Low-Frequency Flow Phenomena on the Vehicle Underbody Using Particle Image Velocimetry

The increasing importance of minimizing drag and the absence of an exhaust system result in battery electric vehicles (BEVs) commonly having a very streamlined underbody. Although this shape of underbody is typically characterized by a low acoustic interference potential, significant flow resonance can be observed for certain vehicle configurations and frequencies below 30 Hz. Since the interior of the vehicle can be excited as a Helmholtz resonator, these low-frequency fluctuations result in reduced comfort for the passengers. As preliminary studies have shown, the flow around the front wheel spoilers significantly influences this flow phenomenon. Flow separation occurs at the front-wheel spoilers and at the front wheels. This leads to the generation of vortices which are growing significantly while being transported downstream with the flow. Even small geometric changes to add-on components on the underbody significantly influence both aerodynamics and aeroacoustics.

This paper contributes to the Committee on Commonized Aerodynamics Automotive Testing Standards (CAATS) initiative, established by the late Gary Elfstrom. It is collaboratively compiled by automotive wind tunnel users and operators within the Subsonic Aerodynamic Testing Association (SATA). Its specific focus lies in automotive wind tunnel test techniques, encompassing both those relevant to passenger car and race car development. It is part of the comprehensive CAATS series, which addresses not only test techniques but also wind tunnel calibration, uncertainty analysis, and wind tunnel correction methods. The core objective of this paper is to furnish comprehensive guidelines for wind tunnel testing and associated techniques. It begins by elucidating the initial wind tunnel setup and vehicle arrangement within it.

Improvement of Post-Oxidation for Low-Emission Engines through 3D-CFD Virtual Development

There is a growing need for low-emissions concepts due to stricter emission regulations, more stringent homologation cycles, and the possibility of a ban on new engines by 2035. Of particular concern are the conditions during a cold start, when the Three-Way Catalyst is not yet heated to its light-off temperature. During this period, the catalyst remains inactive, thereby failing to convert pollutants. Reducing the time needed to reach this temperature is crucial to comply with the more stringent emissions standards. The post oxidation by means of secondary air injection, illustrated in this work, is a possible solution to reduce the time needed to reach the above-mentioned temperature. The strategy consists of injecting air into the exhaust manifold via secondary air injectors to oxidize unburned fuel that comes from a rich combustion within the cylinder.

Numerical Investigation on the Cause-and-Effect Chain for Cycle-to-Cycle Variation of Direct-Injection Spark-Ignition Engine

Due to increasingly strict emission regulations, lean combustion concept has become an essential direction of internal combustion engine development to reduce engine emissions. However, lean combustion will lead high combustion instability and unpredictive engine emissions. The combustion instability is represented as the high cycle-to-cycle variation. Therefore, understanding the mechanism of cycle-to-cycle variation is crucial for the internal combustion engine design. This paper investigates the cause-and-effect chain of cycle-to-cycle variation of spark ignition engines using 3D CFD simulations with CONVERGE v3.0. The cyclic variations were simulated through Large Eddy Simulations, and the simulations based on Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes were used as supplements. The analysis focuses on two key factors that determine the combustion process: the turbulent intensity and the homogeneity of the air/fuel mixture.

Methods for the Holistic Evaluation of the Fuel Influence on Gasoline Engine Combustion

The proportion of new registrations with battery-electric and hybrid powertrains is rising steadily. This shows the strong trend in the automotive industry away from conventional powertrains with internal combustion engines. The aim is to reduce the transport sector's contribution to CO2 emissions. However, it should be noted that this only applies when renewable energy is used. Studies show the relevance of the system boundaries under consideration, which makes the application of Life Cycle Assessment indispensable. According to these studies, the various types of powertrains differ only slightly in their greenhouse gas impact. Rather, the energy supply chain plays a significant role. Moreover, a ban on combustion engines would lead to an additional increase in cumulative CO2 emissions. An important aspect on the way to sustainable mobility solutions is addressing the existing fleet.

Beamforming Quantification of Acoustic Transmission Paths for Passenger Vehicles Using a Reciprocal Approach

This paper presents an experimental method for measuring transmission paths from the exterior to the interior of a passenger vehicle using a reciprocal approach: A production vehicle was placed in a semi-anechoic environment; artificial noise sources were placed at the location of the occupant’s ear(s) inside the vehicle and beamforming arrays with a total of more than 300 microphones were used to observe apparent noise sources on the vehicle exterior resulting from transmission paths. This makes it possible to quickly measure transmission paths over the whole vehicle body. One of the motivations for this work is the monitoring of sealing quality on production vehicles. Artificial seal breaches were introduced on the vehicle and a number of excitation signals were assessed to develop a method to detect and localise leakage noise sources.

An Efficient Hybrid Computational Process for Interior Noise Prediction in Aeroacoustic Vehicle Development

Numerical methodologies for aeroacoustic analyses are increasingly crucial for car manufacturers to optimize the effectiveness of vehicle development. In the present work, a hybrid numerical tool based on the combination of a delayed detached-eddy simulation and a finite element model, which relies on the Lighthill’s acoustic analogy and the acoustic perturbation equations, is presented. The computational aeroacoustics is performed by the software OpenFOAM and Actran, concerning respectively the CFD and the FEM. The aeroacoustic behavior of the SUV Lamborghini Urus at a cruising speed of 140 km/h has been investigated. The main aerodynamic noise phenomena occurring in the side mirror region in a frequency range up to 5 kHz are discussed. The numerical simulations have been verified against the measurements performed in the aeroacoustic wind tunnel of the University of Stuttgart, operated by FKFS.

Influence of Wheel Wake on Vehicle Aerodynamics: An Eddy-Resolving Simulation Study

A computational study of the vehicle aerodynamics influenced by the wake of the rotating wheel taking into account a detailed rim geometry is presently performed. The car configuration corresponds to a full-scale (1:1) notchback configuration of the well-known ‘DrivAer’ vehicle model, Heft et al. [1]. The objective of the present work is to investigate the performance of some popular turbulence models in conjunction with different methods for handling the wheel rotation – rotating wall velocity, ‘multiple reference frame’ and ‘sliding grid algorithm’. The specific focus hereby is on a near-wall RANS eddy-viscosity model based on elliptic-relaxation, sensitized to resolve fluctuating turbulence by introducing a specifically modeled production term in the scale-supplying equation, motivated by the Scale-Adaptive Simulation approach (SAS, [2]), proposed by Krumbein et al. [3].

Design of an Additive Manufactured Natural Gas Engine with Thermally Conditioned Active Prechamber

In order to decarbonize and lower the overall emissions of the transport sector, immediate and cost-effective powertrain solutions are needed. Natural gas offers the advantage of a direct reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions due to its better Carbon to Hydrogen ratio (C/H) compared to common fossil fuels, e.g. gasoline or diesel. Moreover, an optimized engine design suiting the advantages of natural gas in knock resistance and lean mixtures keeping in mind the challenges of power density, efficiency and cold start manoeuvres. In the public funded project MethMag (Methane lean combustion engine) a gasoline fired three-cylinder-engine is redesigned based on this change of requirements and benchmarked against the previous gasoline engine.

Virtual Development of a Single-Cylinder Engine for High Efficiency by the Adoption of eFuels, Methanol, Pre-Chamber and Millerization

The new CO2 and emissions limits imposed to European manufacturers require the adoption of different innovative solutions, such as the use of potentially CO2-neutral synthetic fuels alongside a tailored development of the internal combustion engine, as an excellent solution to accompany the hybridization of vehicles. Dr.Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG and FKFS, already partners for the development of engines with eFuels, propose a new study carried out on a research engine, investigating the combination of Porsche synthetic gasoline (POSYN) with an engine with millerization and passive pre-chamber. The use of CO2-neutral fuels allow for an immediate reduction in CO2 emissions from all cars already on the market, particularly since Porsche is one of the manufacturers whose cars remain in use for the longest time. The data collected on a single-cylinder engine test bench, for different fuels, with conventional spark plug are used as input for the calibration of 3D-CFD simulations.

Analysis of the Applicability of Water Injection in Combination with an eFuel for Knock Mitigation and Improved Engine Efficiency

The development of future gasoline engines is dominated by the study of new technologies aimed at reducing the engine negative environmental impact and increase its thermal efficiency. One common trend is to develop smaller engines able to operate in stoichiometric conditions across the whole engine map for better efficiency, lower fuel consumption, and optimal conversion rate of the three-way catalyst (TWC). Water injection is one promising technique, as it significantly reduces the engine knock tendency and avoids fuel enrichment for exhaust temperature mitigation at high power operation. With the focus on reducing the carbon footprint of the automotive sector, another vital topic of research is the investigation of new alternative CO2-neutral fuels or so-called eFuels. Several studies have already shown how these new synthetic fuels can be produced by exploiting renewable energy sources and can significantly reduce engine emissions.

An Operating Strategy Approach for Serial/Parallel Hybrid Electric Vehicles

In this paper, a serial/parallel hybrid electric vehicle with a 17 kWh battery and 400 V voltage level is simulated. The vehicle is a C-segment vehicle, which has optimized driving resistances. It also has an external recharge possibility, which enables fully electric driving. The vehicle uses an Otto-engine concept as well as two electric motors. One motor is a permanent magnet synchronous motor and can be used as traction motor or generator, the other one is an induction motor used as main traction motor for the vehicle. The vehicle uses a 2-speed gearbox, where the electric motors are mounted in P2-configuration. To reach optimal results for the fuel consumption, an operating strategy based on the Equivalent Consumption Minimization Strategy (ECMS) is introduced and implemented in the vehicle simulation.

The Effect of Unsteady Incident Flow on Drag Measurements for Different Vehicle Geometries in an Open Jet Wind Tunnel

Automotive engineers use the wind tunnel to improve a vehicle’s aerodynamic properties on the road. However, a car driving on the road does not experience the steady-state, uniform flow characteristic of the wind tunnel. Wind, terrain and traffic all cause the flow experienced by the vehicle to be highly transient. Therefore, it is imperative to understand the effects of forces acting on the vehicle resulting from unsteady flow. To this end, the FKFS swing® installed in the University of Stuttgart’s model scale wind tunnel was used to create 36 different incident flow signals with time-resolved yaw angles. The cD values of five different 25% vehicle models, each with a notchback and a squareback configuration, were measured while under the influence of the aforementioned signals. The vehicle models were chosen to ensure a variety of different geometries, but at the same time also to enable isolated comparison of specific geometric properties.

LPG and Prechamber as Enabler for Highly Performant and Efficient Combustion Processes Under Stoichiometric Conditions

The European Union has defined legally binding CO2-fleet targets for new cars until 2030. Therefore, improvement of fuel economy and carbon dioxide emission reduction is becoming one of the most important issues for the car manufacturers. Today’s conventional car powertrain systems are reaching their technical limits and will not be able to meet future CO2 targets without further improvement in combustion efficiency, using low carbon fuels (LCF), and at least mild electrification. This paper demonstrates a highly efficient and performant combustion engine concept with a passive pre-chamber spark plug, operating at stoichiometric conditions and powered with liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Even from fossil origin, LPG features many advantages such as low carbon/hydrogen ratio, low price and broad availability. In future, it can be produced from renewables and it is in liquid state under relatively low pressures, allowing the use of conventional injection and fuel supply components.

3D-CFD Full Engine Simulation Application for Post-Oxidation Description

The introduction of real driving emissions cycles and increasingly restrictive emissions regulations force the automotive industry to develop new and more efficient solutions for emission reductions. In particular, the cold start and catalyst heating conditions are crucial for modern cars because is when most of the emissions are produced. One interesting strategy to reduce the time required for catalyst heating is post-oxidation. It consists in operating the engine with a rich in-cylinder mixture and completing the oxidation of fuel inside the exhaust manifold. The result is an increase in temperature and enthalpy of the gases in the exhaust, therefore heating the three-way-catalyst. The following investigation focuses on the implementation of post-oxidation by means of scavenging in a four-cylinder, turbocharged, direct injection spark ignition engine. The investigation is based on detailed measurements that are carried out at the test-bench.

Methods to Investigate the Importance of eFuel Properties for Enhanced Emission and Mixture Formation

Synthetic fuels from renewable energy sources can be a significant contribution on the roadmap to sustainable mobility. Porsche sees electro-mobility as the top priority, but eFuels produced by renewable electricity are an effective addition to support the defossilization of the transportation sector. In addition to the sustainability aspect, the composition and properties of eFuels can be optimized via the synthetic fuel production path. The use of optimized fuel formulations has a direct influence on combustion and emission behavior. The latter is one focus of the development of internal combustion engines in the wake of constantly tightening emissions legislation. The increasing restrictions on vehicles with internal combustion engines require the reduction of emissions. Particulate matter emissions are among others the focus of criticism. The composition and properties of fuels can reduce particulate emissions and the formation of unburned hydrocarbons to a high degree.

The increasingly stringent targets for the automotive industry towards sustainability are being addressed not only with the improvement of engine efficiency, but also with growing research about alternative, synthetic, and CO2-neutral fuels. These fuels are produced using renewable energy sources, with the goal of making them CO2-neutral and also to reduce a significant amount of engine emissions, especially particulate matter (PM) and total hydrocarbon (THC). The objective of this work is to study the behavior and the potential of an eFuel developed by Porsche, called POSYN (POrscheSYNthetic) and to compare it with a standard gasoline.
