A Method of Frequency Content Based Analysis of Driving Braking Behavior

Typically, when one thinks of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), systems such as Forward Collision Warning (FCW) and Collision Imminent Braking (CIB) come to mind. In these systems driver assistance is provided based on knowledge about the subject vehicle and surrounding objects. A new class of these systems is being implemented. These systems not only use information on the surrounding objects but also use information on the driver's response to an event, to determine if intervention is necessary. As a result of this trend, an advanced level of understanding of driver braking behavior is necessary. This paper presents an alternate method of analyzing driver braking behavior. This method uses a frequency content based approach to study driver braking and allows for the extraction of significantly more data from driver profiles than traditionally would have been done.

Comparative Assessment of Frequency Dependent Joint Properties Using Direct and Inverse Identification Methods

Elastomeric joints are utilized in many automotive applications, and exhibit frequency and excitation amplitude dependent properties. Current methods commonly identify only the cross-point joint property using displacement excitation at stepped single frequencies. This process is often time consuming and is limited to measuring a single dynamic stiffness term of the joint stiffness matrix. This study focuses on developing tractable laboratory inverse experiments to identify frequency dependent stiffness matrices up to 1000 Hz. Direct measurements are performed on a commercial elastomer test system and an inverse experiment consisting of an elastic beam (with a square cross section) attached to a cylindrical elastomeric joint. Sources of error in the inverse methodology are thoroughly examined and explained through simulation which include ill-conditioning of matrices and the sensitivity to modeling error.

The Effects of Varying Penetration Rates of L4-L5 Autonomous Vehicles on Fuel Efficiency and Mobility of Traffic Networks

With the current drive of automotive and technology companies towards producing vehicles with higher levels of autonomy, it is inevitable that there will be an increasing number of SAE level L4-L5 autonomous vehicles (AVs) on roadways in the near future. Microscopic traffic simulators that simulate realistic traffic flow are crucial in studying, understanding and evaluating the fuel usage and mobility effects of having a higher number of autonomous vehicles (AVs) in traffic under realistic mixed traffic conditions including both autonomous and non-autonomous vehicles. In this paper, L4-L5 AVs with varying penetration rates in total traffic flow were simulated using the microscopic traffic simulator Vissim on urban, mixed and freeway roadways. The roadways used in these simulations were replicas of real roadways in and around Columbus, Ohio, including an AV shuttle routes in operation.

Motion Capture Applications in Forensic Injury Accident Reconstruction

Forensic injury accident reconstruction is used to determine what happened in an accident, typically for use in a court of law. In order to be admitted as evidence in a trial, the analysis must be scientifically sound, and performed utilizing standard scientific methods. The use of motion capture methods for forensic biomechanical applications provides an accurate, scientifically proven technique that has advantages not only due to its technical capabilities, but also in its highly visual manner of result presentation. This paper illustrates the use of a near-infrared motion capture system in two different types of forensic biomechanics applications. In one case, motion capture was utilized to capture externally applied force data and synchronized with the three-dimensional human body posture to perform a musculoskeletal biomechanics analysis.

The Use of Single Moving Vehicle Testing to Duplicate the Dynamic Vehicle Response From Impacts Between Two Moving Vehicles

The Federal Side Impact Test Procedure prescribed by FMVSS 214, simulates a central, orthogonal intersection collision between two moving vehicles by impacting the side of the stationary test vehicle with a moving test buck in a crabbed configuration. While the pre- and post-impact speeds of the vehicles involved in an accident can not be duplicated using this method, closing speeds, vehicle damage, vehicle speed changes and vehicle accelerations can be duplicated. These are the important parameters for the examination of vehicle restraint system performance and the prediction of occupant injury. The acceptability of this method of testing is not as obvious for the reconstruction of accidents where the impact is non-central, or the angle of impact is not orthogonal. This paper will examine the use of crash testing with a single moving vehicle to simulate oblique or non-central collisions between two moving vehicles.

Development of Bicycle Surrogate for Bicyclist Pre-Collision System Evaluation

As part of active safety systems for reducing bicyclist fatalities and injuries, Bicyclist Pre-Collision System (BPCS), also known as Bicyclist Autonomous Emergency Braking System, is being studied currently by several vehicles manufactures. This paper describes the development of a surrogate bicyclist which includes a surrogate bicycle and a surrogate bicycle rider to support the development and evaluation of BPCS. The surrogate bicycle is designed to represent the visual and radar characteristics of real bicyclists in the United States. The size of bicycle surrogate mimics the 26 inch adult bicycle, which is the most popular adult bicycle sold in the US. The radar cross section (RCS) of the surrogate bicycle is designed based on RCS measurement of the real adult sized bicycles.

Application of Scaled Deflection Injury Criteria to Two Small, Fragile Females in Side Impact Motor Vehicle Crashes

Thoracic injury criteria have been previously developed to predict thoracic injury for vehicle occupants as a function of biomechanical response. Historically, biomechanical testing of post-mortem human surrogates (PMHS) for injury criteria development has primarily been focused on mid-sized males. Response targets and injury criteria for other demographics, including small females, have been determined by scaling values from mid-sized males. The objective of this study was to explore the applicability of scaled injury criteria to their representative population. Two PMHS were subjected to a side-impact loading condition which replicates a near-side, MDB-to-vehicle impact for the driver. This was accomplished using the Advanced Side Impact System, or ASIS, on a HYGE sled. The sled acceleration matched the acceleration profile of an impacted vehicle, while the four pneumatic cylinders of the ASIS produced realistic door intrusion.

Accuracy Assessment of Three-Dimensional Vehicle Edge Features Generated with Aid of Photogrammetric Epipolar Lines

Photogrammetry is widely used in the automotive and accident reconstruction communities to extract three-dimensional information from photographs. Prior studies in the literature have demonstrated the accuracy of such methods when photographs contain easily-identifiable, distinct points; however, it is often desirable to determine measurements for locations where a seam, edge, or contour line is available. To exploit such details, an analyst can control the direction that the epipolar line is projected onto the camera plane by strategic selection of photographs. This process constrains the search for the corresponding 3D point to a straight line that can be projected perpendicular to the seam, edge, or contour line. Thus, the goal of this study was to evaluate the modeling accuracy for cases in which an analyst uses epipolar lines in a workflow.

Effects of Adjacent Vehicle Seat Positions on Child Restraint System (CRS) Performance in Far-Side Impacts

Many vehicles allow consumers to adapt the vehicle environment to their families’ needs by folding or removing one or more rear row seats. It is currently unclear how different seat configurations affect child restraint systems (CRS) installed in adjacent seats. The objective is to quantify CRS performance in far-side impacts when the seating position adjacent to the CRS is in its normal upright position, folded in half, or removed. Twelve tests were conducted. Second row seats from a recent model year minivan were obtained, including full size captain’s chairs from the outboard positions and narrow seats from the center position. Rear-facing (RF) and forward-facing (FF) CRS were installed one at a time in either the outboard or center position. The seating position adjacent to the CRS was set in either the standard upright position, folded in half, or removed. Far-side impacts were conducted at 10° anterior of pure lateral at 24.8 ± 0.2 g. The Q3s ATD was used for all tests.

A Methodology for Threat Assessment in Cut-in Vehicle Scenarios

Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) has become a common standard feature assisting greater safety and fuel efficiency in the latest automobiles. Yet some ADAS systems fail to improve driving comfort for vehicle occupants who expect human-like driving. One of the more difficult situations in ADAS-assisted driving involves instances with cut-in vehicles. In vehicle control, determining the moment at which the system recognizes a cut-in vehicle as an active target is a challenging task. A well-designed comprehensive threat assessment developed for cut-in vehicle driving scenarios should eliminate abrupt and excessive deceleration of the vehicle and produce a smooth and safe driving experience. This paper proposes a novel methodology for threat assessment for driving instances involving a cut-in vehicle. The methodology takes into consideration kinematics, vehicle dynamics, vehicle stability, road condition, and driving comfort.

Multiple Rear-end Collisions in Freeway Traffic, Their Causes and Their Avoidance

The sensitivity factor, λ, of stimulus-response car following equations was computed, based on response times, τ, obtained from aerial survey data. Vehicles of a platoon are investigated as they approach, proceed through, and leave behind a kinematic disturbance, and an inherent local and asymptotic instability is discovered. Aerial survey data is used in a numerical example to demonstrate how multiple rear-end collisions can be triggered by one vehicle. A driver aid system, informing drivers about the differential velocity between lead and following vehicles, could improve stability, although the final answer appears to lie in automated or semi-automated longitudinal control systems.

Cooperative Collision Avoidance in a Connected Vehicle Environment

Connected vehicle (CV) technology is among the most heavily researched areas in both the academia and industry. The vehicle to vehicle (V2V), vehicle to infrastructure (V2I) and vehicle to pedestrian (V2P) communication capabilities enable critical situational awareness. In some cases, these vehicle communication safety capabilities can overcome the shortcomings of other sensor safety capabilities because of external conditions such as 'No Line of Sight' (NLOS) or very harsh weather conditions. Connected vehicles will help cities and states reduce traffic congestion, improve fuel efficiency and improve the safety of the vehicles and pedestrians. On the road, cars will be able to communicate with one another, automatically transmitting data such as speed, position, and direction, and send alerts to each other if a crash seems imminent. The main focus of this paper is the implementation of Cooperative Collision Avoidance (CCA) for connected vehicles.

Development and Calibration of the Large Omnidirectional Child ATD Head Finite Element Model

To improve the biofidelity of the currently available Hybrid III 10-year-old (HIII-10C) Anthropomorphic Test Device (ATD), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has developed the Large Omnidirectional Child (LODC) ATD. The LODC head is a redesigned HIII-10C head with mass properties and modified skin material required to match pediatric biomechanical impact response targets from the literature. A dynamic, nonlinear finite element (FE) model of the LODC head has been developed using the mesh generating tool Hypermesh based on the three-dimensional CAD model. The material data, contact definitions, and initial conditions are defined in LS-PrePost and converted to LS-Dyna solver input format. The aluminum head skull is stiff relative to head flesh material and was thus modeled as a rigid material. For the actual LODC, the head flesh is form fit onto the skull and held in place through contact friction.

Criticality Assessment of Simulation-Based AV/ADAS Test Scenarios

Testing any new safety technology of Autonomous Vehicles (AV) and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) requires simulation-based validation and verification. The specific scenarios used for testing, outline incidences of accidents or near-miss events. In order to simulate these scenarios, specific values for all the above parameters are required including the ego vehicle model. The ‘criticality’ of a scenario is defined in terms of the difficulty level of the safety maneuver. A scenario could be over-critical, critical, or under-critical. In over-critical scenarios, it is impossible to avoid a crash whereas, for under-critical scenarios, no action may be required to avoid a crash. The criticality of the scenario depends on various parameters e.g. speeds, distances, road/tire parameters, etc. In this paper, we propose a definition of criticality metric and identify the parameters such that a scenario becomes critical.

AV/ADAS Safety-Critical Testing Scenario Generation from Vehicle Crash Data

This research leverages publicly available crash data to construct safety-critical scenarios focusing primarily on Level 3 Automated Driving Systems (ADS) safety assessment under highway driving conditions. NHTSA’s Crashworthiness Data System (CDS) has a rich dataset of representative crashes sampled from numerous Primary Sampling Units (PSUs) across the country. Each of these datasets includes the storyline, road geometry information, detailed description of actors involved in the crash, weather information, scene diagrams, crash images, and a myriad of other crash-specific details. The methodology adopted aims to generate critical scenarios from real-world driving to complement the existent regulatory tests for the validation of L3 ADS. For this work, a four-step approach was adopted to extract safety-critical scenarios from crash data.

Prescan Extension Testing of an ADAS Camera

Testing vision-based advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) in a Camera-in-the-Loop (CiL) bench setup, where external visual inputs are used to stimulate the system, provides an opportunity to experiment with a wide variety of test scenarios, different types of vehicle actors, vulnerable road users, and weather conditions that may be difficult to replicate in the real world. In addition, once the CiL bench is setup and operating, experiments can be performed in less time when compared to track testing alternatives. In order to better quantify normal operating zones, track testing results were used to identify behavior corridors via a statistical methodology. After determining normal operational variability via track testing of baseline stationary surrogate vehicle and pedestrian scenarios, these operating zones were applied to screen-based testing in a CiL test setup to determine particularly challenging scenarios which might benefit from replication in a track testing environment.

Integrated Approach to the Selection of Cost-Effective and Lean Process and Equipment in Forming

A significant number of formed parts constitute the components of an automobile or aircraft. The formed blanks for the components are produced at different temperatures ranging from room temperature to 2250 degrees Fahrenheit for steel. Forming progressions convert a basic shape or geometry (a cylindrical billet, for example) of metal into a more complex shape close to the required final component geometry. The progression steps, choice of temperatures and equipment significantly impact the cost of the blank. A ‘Discriminating Cost Model’ was developed to capture the cost effectiveness of a given choice of process or equipment, and an AI (Artificial Intelligence) search algorithm implemented to quickly search through the large number of process and equipment selection options to arrive at the most cost effective choice. Two applications of this methodology to existing plant processes to significantly reduce cost and implement ‘lean’ principles of manufacturing are discussed.

System Engineering of an Advanced Driver Assistance System

Current Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) often interact with the driver; aiding with either warnings or direct intervention. This work explores the development of an ADAS system to provide lane departure warning, forward collision warning, and a recommended following distance for a custom plug-in hybrid-electric vehicle. The system utilizes off-the-shelf hardware with in-house computer vision and sensor fusion algorithms to create a low-cost SAE Level 0 driver assistance system. The system utilizes a radar sensor as well as a camera to detect, classify, and track target vehicles. This work will illustrate the systems engineering methods used for outlining customer requirements, technical requirements, component selection, software development, simulation, vehicle fitment, and validation. Similar system engineering processes could be implemented for higher level SAE systems.

Effectiveness of Warning Signals in Semi-Autonomous Vehicles

The rise of automation in the automotive industry has ensured significant progress in vehicle safety and infrastructure. During the transition to full autonomy, the driver is often the redundancy and safety feature in the event of a hazard or automation error. Understanding driver behavior in the transition from non-driver to driver is important for safety. Proper handling of transitions will be more critical as these events become less common and users trust automated driving systems. This research investigates the case of SAE level-3 automated driving systems, where the driver need not constantly pay attention but is responsible for reaction during hazards. Findings include quantitative and qualitative assessment of various warning modes for a distracted driver responding to an automated driving failure situation. Driver response time and behavior for these events are compared to instances with minimal warning systems.
