Measurement of Piston Secondary Motion Using the New Digital Telemeter

The authors have developed a measurement technique using a new digital telemeter which measures the piston secondary motion as ensuring high accuracy while under the operation. We applied this new digital telemeter to several measurements and analysis on the piston secondary motion that can cause piston noises, and here are some of the results from our measurement. We have confirmed that these piston motions vary by only several tenths of millimeter changes of the piston specifications such as the piston-pin offset and the center of gravity of the piston. As in other cases, we have found that a mere change of pressure in the crankcase or the amount of lubricating oil supplied on the cylinder bore varies the piston motion that may give effect on the piston noises.

The Development of JASO GLV-1 Next Generation Low Viscosity Automotive Gasoline Engine Oils Specification

It is well understood that using lower viscosity engine oils can greatly improve fuel economy [1, 2, 3, 4]. However, it has been impossible to evaluate ultra-low viscosity engine oils (SAE 0W-12 and below) utilizing existing fuel economy test methods. As such, there is no specification for ultra-low viscosity gasoline engine oils [5]. We therefore developed firing and motored fuel economy test methods for ultra-low viscosity oils using engines from Japanese automakers [6, 7, 8]. This was done under the auspices of the JASO Next Generation Engine Oil Task Force (“TF” below), which consists mainly of Japanese automakers and entities working in the petroleum industry. Moreover, the TF used these test methods to develop the JASO GLV-1 specification for next-generation ultra-low viscosity automotive gasoline engine oils such as SAE 0W-8 and 0W-12. In developing the JASO GLV-1 specification, Japanese fuel economy tests and the ILSAC engine tests for evaluating engine reliability were used.

Development of Abradable Flame Spray Coating Technology

The authors, et al. have succeeded in the practical application of the abradable flame spray coating, used in aircraft engines for the prevention of air leakage and the improvement of efficiency, to automobile turbochargers for the first time in the world. Two layers consisting of a bond coated layer and an abradable layer used to be coated by separate spray nozzles under the conventional technique. In this paper, equations of relations between various flame spray coating conditions and the quality of coated film, which were derived from measured results, will be described. Flame spray coating conditions, that allow the double layer coating by the same spray nozzle, have been determined for each layer. Temperatures and speeds of the flame were measured by means of two-color type high-speed cameras, and equations of their relations with the flame spray coating conditions are derived from the measured result.

Analysis of Piston Friction - Effects of Cylinder Bore Temperature Distribution and Oil Temperature

Hybrid vehicles (HVs) are becoming more widely used. Since HVs supplement engine drive with motor power, the lubricant oil temperature remains at a lower level than in a conventional gasoline vehicle. This study analyzed the effect of cylinder bore temperature and lubricant oil temperature on engine friction. The results showed that, although the lubricant oil temperature was not relevant, the bore temperature had significant effect on piston friction. It was found that raising the temperature of the middle section of the cylinder bore was the most effective way of reducing piston friction.

Pre-Ignition of Gasoline-Air Mixture Triggered by a Lubricant Oil Droplet

This paper presents the effects of a lubricant oil droplet on the start of combustion of a fuel-air mixture. Lubricant oil is thought to be a major source of low-speed pre-ignition in highly boosted spark ignition engines. However, the phenomenon has not yet been fully understood because its unpredictability and the complexity of the mixture in the engine cylinder make analysis difficult. In this study, a single oil droplet in a combustion cylinder was considered as a means of simplifying the phenomenon. The conditions under which a single oil droplet ignites earlier than the fuel-air mixture were investigated. Tests were conducted by using a rapid compression expansion machine. A single oil droplet was introduced into the cylinder through an injector developed for this study. The ignition and the flame propagation were observed through an optical window, using a high-speed video camera.

Challenge to the Diesel Engine Lubrication with Fuel

A study of diesel fuel as a lubricant for diesel engines was conducted with the aim of dramatically reducing engine friction and eliminating the need to change the lubricating oil. A prototype single-cylinder engine modified for diesel fuel lubrication was made, and it was confirmed that firing operation is possible. Piston friction during the firing operation was reduced by modifying the shape of the cylinder liner surface to improve the retention of the lubricating oil. The study produced valid findings concerning engine lubrication, not only with diesel fuel, but also with ultra-low viscosity oil.

Wear Analysis of DLC Coating in Oil Containing Mo-DTC

Diamond-like carbon (DLC) coating has excellent properties like high hardness and low friction. So it has attracted considerable attention in recent years as a low-friction coating material. However, some DLC coatings display increased wear in oil containing Mo-DTC (Molybdenum-dithiocarbamates). Wear analyses of sliding surface after block-on-ring tests were conducted suggest that the decomposition product from Mo-DTC, MoO3, reacts with active sites in the DLC to promote the wear of DLC.

Development of the Electronically Controlled Hydraulic Cooling Fan System

A new engine cooling fan system has been developed, in which the fan is driven by a hydraulic pump and motor and controlled electronically by a computer. By utilizing the hydrostatic power under precise control, the fan generates not only high airflow volume but also optimum flow rate for the various engine conditions. Also in this system, a relatively high efficiency is gained because the clearance between the tip of the fan blade and a shroud designed to be short, thanks to the installation of the fan on the radiator. As the result of these functions, the following features have been obtained which are superior to conventional fan systems like a engine-driven fan with fluid coupling or an electric-motor fan. Analysis of Con-Rod Big-End Bearing Lubrication on the Basis of Oil Supply Rate

The purpose of this study is to analyze con-rod bearing lubrication under reduced oil supply rate conditions. An engine was modified to measure the oil supply rate to a con-rod big-end bearing. Then the effects of the oil supply rate on bearing temperatures and the contact between a journal and a bearing were investigated in order to analyze lubrication characteristics. The bearing temperatures increased in accordance with reduced oil supply rate. On the other hand, the contact frequency hardly changed under almost all conditions, but steeply increased near one-third of the standard oil supply rate at the highest speed of 5000 rpm in the experiments. The results show that the reduced oil supply rate decreases the cooling effect but the hydrodynamic lubrication was sufficiently achieved except the above-mentioned severe condition.

The transfer efficiency for painting processes utilizing water-borne materials is low, and the residual paint is disposed of as waste. In this study, we focused on a recycling system to collect and dissolve the paint over-spray in the booth water, and to concentrate and regenerate it by means of an ultra filter (UF). Paint adaptable to the recycling system has been developed by providing compatibility between the high hydrophilicity of liquid paint and the high hydrophobicity of the paint film, in order to ensure the recyclability and the high anti-corrosion performance required of paint on automobile underbody parts. This recycling technology is used in an actual propeller shaft painting process and provides large waste reduction and a decrease in painting cost.

Numerical Study of Mixture Formation and Combustion Processes in a Direct Injection Gasoline Engine with Fan-Shaped Spray

Numerical 3-D simulations are performed for the improvement of the new direct injection gasoline engine. A solution based local grid refinement method has been developed in order to reduce the CPU time. This method has been incorporated into the CFD program (STAR-CD) with in-house spray and combustion models. Calculation results were compared with the experimental data taken by the LIF technique, and good agreement was obtained for the mixture formation and combustion processes. Some calculations were carried out for the fuel-air mixture formation process during late injection stratified combustion and the following results were obtained. The unburnt fuel has a tendency to remain in the side of the piston cavity at the latter part of the combustion period. To reduce the amount of unburnt fuel, it was shown that the combination of a thin thickness fan spray and compact cavity forms a spherical mixture, suitable for combustion.

Effects of Fuel Properties on SIDI Fuel Injector Deposit

The tendency of spark ignition direct injection (SIDI) engines to form injector deposits was investigated using engine dynamometer tests on a SIDI engine equipped with fan spray type injectors. Fifteen test fuels with varying 90% distillation temperature (T90), aromatics, olefins, oxygenates and sulfur levels were prepared to identify the effects of fuel properties on injector deposits. The results suggested that not only the T90 but also the number of alkyl substituent of aromatics had effects on injector deposit formation. Effects of detergents on the injector deposit cleanliness were also evaluated in this study.

Experimental Analysis for the Improvement of Radiator Cooling Air Intake and Discharge

EXPERIMENTAL ANALYSIS for the increase of the radiator cooling air has been performed with special attention to the utilization of air pressure in high-speed running conditions. Measurements of pressure distributions at the radiator cooling air intake showed that the prevention of the occurrence of separations around the bumper is the efficient method to increase the cooling air. Furthermore, the optimum configuration for the radiator cooling air discharge has also been experimentally studied using a simplified model which simulates the under part of the engine compartment. These improvements made the vehicle radiator cooling air volume increase 14% under high-speed running conditions.

The Humidity Control System Applied to Reduce Ventilation Heat Loss of HVAC Systems

Vehicles have been more required to save energy against the background of the tendency of ecology. As the result of improving efficiency of internal combustion engines and adoption of electric power train, heat loss from engine coolant, which is used to heat the cabin, decreases and consequently additional energy may be consumed to maintain thermal comfort in the passenger compartment in winter. This paper is concerned with the humidity control system that realizes reduction of ventilation heat loss by controlling recirculation rate of the HVAC system by using highly accurate humidity sensor to evaluate risk of fogging on the windshield. As the results of the control, fuel consumption of hybrid vehicles decreases and maximum range of electric vehicles increases.

The New Toyota Inline 4-Cylinder 2.5L Gasoline Engine

In order to adapt to energy security and the changes of global-scale environment, further improvement of fuel economy and adaptation to each country’s severer exhaust gas emission regulation are required in an automotive engine. To achieve higher power performance with lower fuel consumption, the engine’s basic internal design such as an engine block and cylinder head were changed and the combustion speed was dramatically increased. Consequently, stroke-bore ratio and valve layout were optimized. Also, both flow coefficient and intake tumble ratio port were improved by adopting a laser cladded valve seat. In addition, several new technologies were adopted. The Atkinson cycle using a new Electrical VVT (Variable Valve Timing) and new combustion technology adopting new multi-hole type Direct fuel Injector (DI) improved engine power and fuel economy and reduced exhaust emissions.

Development of Novel Friction Modifier Technology Part 2: Vehicle Testing

Requirements to reduce emissions and improve vehicle fuel economy continue to increase, spurred on by agreements such as the Kyoto Protocol. Lubricants can play a role in improving fuel economy, as evidenced by the rise in the number of engine oil specifications worldwide that require fuel economy improvements. A novel friction modifier technology has been developed to further improve vehicle fuel economy. The development of this novel friction modifier technology which contains only N,O,C,H was previously published along with the initial demonstration of performance in motorized Toyota engines. In order to validate this performance in fired engine tests, oil was evaluated in a Toyota Corolla Fielder with a 1500 cc gasoline engine. Testing was conducted in the Japanese 10-15 and JC08 modes, as well as the European EC mode, and the US FTP mode.

Analysis of the Fuel Liquid Film Thickness of a Port Fuel Injection Engine

In this paper, the authors have developed a new measuring method of the liquid fuel film thickness on walls, such as intake ports, the combustion chamber and cylinder liner of a Port Fuel Injection (PFI) engine, and clarified the fuel film behavior under various running conditions when Fiber-based Laser-Induced Fluorescence (Fiber-based LIF) was applied to the newly developed method. The thickness of the fuel film is measured by detecting the intensity of fluorescence from the film that is irradiated by a He-Cd laser. A single optical fiber is used to simultaneously transmit the laser beam and the fluorescence from the film. In addition, the S/N ratio of the fluorescence is improved by using a He-Cd laser of which the wavelength (λ=442nm) is able to efficiently irradiate test fuel doped 2-3-butandione. Using this method, the fuel film thickness on the wall of the PFI engine was analyzed in two case studies.

Development of Vehicle Air Conditioners for the Refrigerant HFC-134a

Concerns on environmental protection are being intensified throughout the world in recent years. Of those concerns, depletion of the ozone layer in the atomosphere caused by CFC emission into the atomosphere is the target of serious concern as shown in Fig. 1. At present, the use of CFC production is restricted by regulations at the global level, and CFC will be phased out by the end of 1995. In this regard, the authors have developed a new vehicle air conditioner to adapt to a new refrigerant HFC-134a, which is gentle to the ozone layer, and to replace CFC-12. The new refrigerant system was introduced to the market in October, 1991, and the replacement will be almost completed by the end of 1993 for the Lexus and Toyota production vehicles. This paper describes the development of the new compressor lubricant, seal rubber, hose and desiccant by taking into consideration the materials concerned and the number of technological issues involved in the new refrigerant, HFC-134a.

We have developed a new measurement apparatus designed to take orange-peel quality-assessment measurements of paint-finished surfaces on a non-contact basis. This apparatus was developed to determine the relationship between in-line spray-coating conditions and the resulting orange peel surface, and to optimally control/manage the conditions of our existing facilities to ensure the best possible coating results based on the obtained data. The apparatus has been implemented by adopting image analysis, which combines an optical system design based on human inspectors’ visual-checking conditions and a set of straightforward algorithms.

Effect of Gasoline Engine Oil Components on Intake Valve Deposit

This paper describes lubricant technology which helps to prevent intake valve deposit (IVD) formation for use with conventional gasolines without detergents, as well as the IVD evaluation method used in testing. The FED 3462 method was modified to establish a new panel coking test method, with excellent correlation with the engine stand IVD test, for the quantitative evaluation of IVD. Tests have shown that IVD increases when the volatility of base oils becomes higher due to condensation and polymerization of engine oil additives. Furthermore, viscosity index improvers, metallic detergents and ashless dispersants have considerable effect on IVD formation. Based on various experiments, the authors have established a formulation technology for engine oils to lower IVD, which they incorporated in two newly formulated SG oils with lower IVD than conventional 5W-30 SG oil.
