FWD Halfshaft Angle Optimization Using 12 Degree of Freedom Analytical Model

This paper describes the development of an analytical method to assess and optimize halfshaft joint angles to avoid excessive 3rd halfshaft order vibrations during wide-open-throttle (WOT) and light drive-away events. The objective was to develop a test-correlated analytical model to assess and optimize driveline working angles during the virtual design phase of a vehicle program when packaging tradeoffs are decided. A twelve degree-of-freedom (12DOF) system model was constructed that comprehends halfshaft dynamic angle change, axle torque, powertrain (P/T) mount rate progression and axial forces generated by tripot type constant velocity (CV) joints. Note: “tripot” and “tripod” are alternate nomenclatures for the same type of joint. Simple lumped parameter models have historically been used for P/T mount optimization; however, this paper describes a method for using a lumped parameter model to also optimize driveline working angles.

Road Load Simulation Testing for Improved Assessment of Powertrain Noise and Vibration

This paper describes the development of an improved method for Noise and Vibration (N&V) chassis dynamometer testing using Road Load Simulation (RLS). Powertrain-induced noise and vibration testing on a chassis dynamometer has commonly been conducted using fixed loads or simplistic load versus speed approximations. Simple speed control and load control dyno test conditions are largely sufficient to provide representative noise and vibration performance assessment when the powertrain and its controls are insensitive to differences between the actual road load and the dyno load. With the recent growth of advanced engine control systems and hybrid powertrains, more representative road load simulation is required to ensure proper operation of the increasingly sophisticated and diverse powertrain and chassis control systems. Proper exercise of these control systems often determines the quality of the noise and vibration data.

Integration of Independent Front Axles for Gear Mesh Energy

The need for improved axle NVH integration has increased significantly in recent years with industry trends toward full-time and automatic four wheel drive (4wd) systems. Along with seamless 4wd operation, quiet performance has become a universal expectation. Axle gear-mesh noise can be transmitted to the vehicle passenger compartment through airborne paths (not discussed in this paper) and structure-borne paths (the focus of this paper.) A variety of mounting configurations are used in an attempt to provide improved axle isolation and reduce structure-borne transmission of gear-mesh noise. The configuration discussed in this paper is a 4-point vertical mount design for an Independent Front Drive Axle (IFDA). A significant benefit of this configuration is improved isolation in the range of drive torques where axle-related NVH issues typically exist.

Noise and Vibration Measurement Methods for Large Diameter Single-Piece Aluminum Propeller Shafts

This paper describes recently developed test methods and instrumentation to address the specific noise and vibration measurement challenges posed by large-diameter single-piece tubular aluminum propeller (prop) shafts with high modal density. The prop shaft application described in this paper is a light duty truck, although the methods described are applicable to any rotating shaft with similar dynamic properties. To provide a practical example of the newly developed methods and instrumentation, impact FRF data were acquired in-situ for two typical prop shafts of significantly different diameter, in both rotating and stationary conditions. The example data exhibit features that are uniquely characteristic of large diameter single-piece tubular shafts with high modal density, including the particular effect of shaft rotation on the measurements.

Multi Body Dynamics Modeling of Launch Shudder in Electric Vehicles

The continued push for faster automotive design cycles while maintaining high product quality requires increasing fidelity in virtual analysis. One vibration disturbance load case that has been targeted for virtual analysis improvement is launch shudder, particularly in electric vehicle (EV) applications. Launch shudder can be caused by halfshaft constant velocity joint (CVJ) excitation of a powertrain mounting resonance. It is heavily dependent on the CVJ friction characteristics, axle torque, dynamic operating angles of the halfshafts, the mounting system of the powertrain and the transfer path of vibration to the occupant’s seat. The need to model these parameters accurately makes a full vehicle, multi body dynamics model a great candidate for this load case. This study introduces an approach to modeling, analysis and applications of launch shudder simulation at General Motors.

Application of Experimental Transfer Path Analysis and Hybrid FRF-Based Substructuring Model to SUV Axle Noise

This paper describes an axle gear whine noise reduction process that was developed and applied using a combination of experimental and analytical methods. First, an experimental Transfer Path Analysis (TPA) was used to identify major noise paths. Next, modeling and forced response simulation were conducted using the Hybrid FEA-Experimental FRF method known as HYFEX [1]. The HYFEX model consisted of an experimental FRF representation of the frame/body and a finite element (FE) model of the driveline [2] and suspension. The FE driveline model was calibrated using experimental data. The HYFEX model was then used to simulate the axle noise reduction that would be obtained using a modified frame, prior to the availability of a prototype. Hardware testing was used as the final step in the process to confirm the results of the simulation.

Development of an End-of-Line Driveline System Balance Tester

This paper describes the development of a semi-automated end-of-line driveline system balance tester for an automotive assembly plant. The overall objective was to provide final quality assurance for acceptable driveline noise and vibration refinement in a rear wheel drive vehicle. The problem to be solved was how to measure the driveline system unbalance within assembly plant constraints including cycle time, operator capability, and integration with a pre-existing vehicle roll test machine. Several challenging aspects of the tester design and development are presented and solutions to these challenges are addressed. Major design aspects addressed included non-contacting vibration sensing, data acquisition/processing system and vehicle position feedback. Development challenges addressed included interaction of engine and driveline vibration orders, flexible driveline coupling effects, tachometer positional reference error, and vehicle-to-vehicle variation of influence coefficients.

Dual Degree of Freedom Vibration Damper (DDVD) for Driveline Noise and Vibration Issue Resolution

Powertrain and driveline systems interaction in rear wheel drive vehicle development has recently gained attention for the improvement of interior noise and vibration in emerging markets. The driveline is a significant path for engine-generated noise and vibration to reach the interior occupant interfaces, where it affects refinement perception. The interaction of powertrain excitation orders and driveline resonant responders covers a wide range of frequency and vehicle operating conditions. This interaction poses significant challenges during vehicle development. With recent increased demand for higher specific power from diesel engines, driveline refinement has become even more challenging, especially for rear wheel drive vehicles. Two driveline related refinement issues were observed during evaluation of a RWD vehicle. Root cause analysis determined that the first issue (lower rpm boom noise and vibration) was due to engine torsional excitation of the driveline.

Rotational Vibration Test Apparatus for Laser Vibrometer Verification

Prior to making rotational vibration measurements with a laser vibrometer, it is good practice to establish that the instrument is operating properly. This can be accomplished by comparative measurement of a rotational vibration source with known amplitude and frequency. This paper describes the design and development of a rotational vibration apparatus with known amplitude and frequency to be used as a reference for comparison to concurrent and co-located measurements made by a rotational laser vibrometer (RLV). The comparative measurements acquired with the apparatus are helpful to verify proper laser vibrometer operation in between regular calibration intervals, and/or whenever the functionality of the vibrometer is suspect. In the subject apparatus, a Cardan shaft with variable input speed and angle is used to provide output torsional vibration with variable frequency and amplitude.
