An Analytical and Experimental Study of a High Pressure Single Piston Pump for Gasoline Direct Injection (GDi) Engine Applications

In recent years, gasoline direct injection (GDi) engines have been popular due to their inherent potential for reduction of exhaust emissions and fuel consumption to meet stringent EPA standards. These engines require high-pressure fuel injection in order to improve the atomization process and accelerate mixture preparation. The high-pressure fuel pump is an essential component in the GDi system. Therefore, understanding the flow characteristics of this device and its associated behavior is critical for improving the performance of this category of engines. In this paper, the fluid flow characteristics in a high-pressure single-piston pump for use in GDi engines are analyzed using 1-D LMS Imagine.Lab AMESim system and 3-D Ansys Fluent computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models. The flow rate of the fuel pump under various cam speeds has been examined along with characteristics of the pump's control valve.

Development of a Low-Noise High Pressure Fuel Pump for GDi Engine Applications

Fuel systems associated with Gasoline Direct Injection (GDi) engines operate at pressures significantly higher than Port Fuel Injection (PFI) engine fuel systems. Because of these higher pressures, GDi fuel systems require a high pressure fuel pump in addition to the conventional fuel tank lift pump. Such pumps deliver fuel at high pressure to the injectors multiple times per engine cycle. With this extra hardware and repetitive pressurization events, vehicles equipped with GDi fuel systems typically emit higher levels of audible noise than those equipped with PFI fuel systems. A common technique employed to cope with pump noise is to cover or encase the pump in an acoustic insulator, however this method does not address the root causes of the noise. To contend with the consumer complaint of GDi system noise, Delphi and Magneti Marelli have jointly developed a high pressure fuel pump with reduced audible output by concentrating on sources of noise generation within the pump itself.

Minimizing Gasoline Direct Injection (GDi) Fuel System Pressure Pulsations by Robust Fuel Rail Design

Gasoline direct injection (GDi) engines have become popular due to their inherent potential for reduction of exhaust emissions and fuel consumption to meet increasingly stringent environmental standards. These engines require high-pressure fuel injection in order to improve the fuel atomization process and accelerate mixture preparation. To achieve a lower-cost system, a single-piston high-pressure fuel pump design is often employed due to its relative simplicity. However, pumps of this design are acknowledged as the source of high levels of fuel pressure fluctuations which can lead to audible noise, variations in the amount and spray quality of fuel delivery from cylinder to cylinder, compromised durability and consumer dissatisfaction. In this paper, the design process for a high-pressure fuel rail assembly using Robust Engineering methodology is presented.
