Gear Shift Pattern Optimization for Best Fuel Economy, Performance and Emissions

As the FTP-75 drive cycle does not have a prescribed gear shift pattern, automotive OEMs have the flexibility to design. Conventionally, gear shift pattern was formulated based on trial and error method, typically with 10 to 12 iterations on chassis dynamometer. It was a time consuming (i.e. ~ 3 to 4 months) and expensive process. This approach led to declaring poor fuel economy (FE). A simulation procedure was required to generate a gear shift pattern that gives optimal trade-off amongst conflicting objectives (FE, performance and emissions). As a result, a simulation tool was developed in MATLAB to generate an optimum gear shift pattern. Three different SUV/UV models were used as test vehicles in this study. Chassis dyno testing was conducted, and data was collected using the base and optimized gear shift patterns. Dyno test results with optimized gear shift pattern showed FE improvement of ~ 4 to 5% while retaining the NOx margin well above engineering targets.

Using Vehicle Specifications to Gain Insights into Different Automotive Market Requirements

Determination of vehicle specifications (for example, powertrain sizing) is one of the fundamental steps in any new vehicle development process. The vehicle system engineer needs to select an optimum combination of vehicle, engine and transmission characteristics based on the product requirements received from Product Planning (PP) and Marketing teams during concept phase of any vehicle program. This process is generally iterative and requires subject matter expertise. For example, accurate powertrain sizing is essential to meet the required fuel economy (FE), performance and emission targets for different vehicle configurations. This paper analyzes existing vehicle specifications (Passenger Cars/SUVs - Gasoline/Diesel) in different automotive markets (India, Europe, US, Japan) and aims to determine underlying trends across them.

Optimization of Performance and CO2 Emission of a Common Rail DI Diesel Operated Vehicle Using AVL Cruise

The global economy strives towards clean energy in the phase of climate change and the automotive industry is researching in improving the efficiency of automobiles. In respect to that, direct injection types of diesel engines are becoming popular. However, improving the performance and reducing the CO₂ emission of a vehicle is necessary in order to meet the fuel economy targets. A turbocharged common rail direct injection diesel engine is selected for investigation purpose to study its performance and average fuel consumption values over typical driving cycles (UDC, EUDC and BS IV). Experimental work is carried out to collect the vehicle performance and fuel economy test data. The simulation tools are used to speed up the product development process and to bring the new products into the market. The AVL Cruise simulation technique allows us to speed up the optimization of vehicle and powertrain parameters in an early stage of the product development process.

Model based calibration is extensively used by the automotive OEMs (Original Equipment manufacturers) because of its correlation accuracy with test data and freezing the operating parameters such as injection timings, EGR rates, fuel quantity etc. The prediction of Brake specific Fuel consumption (BSFC), Exhaust and intake temperatures are very close to test data. The prediction of Brake specific NOx is directionally reliable with acceptable tolerance.

Duty Cycle Based Fuel Consumption Calculation Using Simulation Methodology for Agricultural Tractor

This project was undertaken with an objective to develop methodology by formulating set of procedures that would help in achieving the end goal. Once methodology is established, it paves way to optimize the end results more effectively which results in reduced lead time during product development. Methodology can either be based on pure experimental investigations or by simulations. Combination of mathematical and empirical approach is inherently followed in simulations, which helps in reducing the testing time and overall cost. Commercial vehicles (CV) have seen paradigm shift in the fuel consumption (FC) certification approaches, with an intention to align with 2016 Paris climate agreement. Use of simulation tool like VECTO for commercial vehicle FC certification has gained momentum in Europe. Overall experience gained in commercial vehicle FC simulation has motivated us to leverage the learnings for off-road applications like agricultural tractors.

Engine Modelling with Smart Online DoE

The implementation of TREM/CEV 5 emission norms on farm equipment will bring in cost pressure due to the need for exhaust after treatment systems. This cost increase needs to be reduced by bringing in more efficient and effective processes to shorten the development phase and to provide better fuel efficiencies. In this work ETAS ASCMO Online DoE with Constraint Modelling (ODCM) was applied to execute smart online DoE on a new common rail diesel engine with EGR, whose exact bounds of operation was not available. A Global test plan with ASCMO Static was created without much focus on detailed constraints of engine operation, other than the full load curve. The parameters which were selected were Speed, Torque, Rail Pressure, Main Timing, EGR Valve Position, Pilot Separation and Quantity and Post Quantity and Separation. For these parameters, the safe operating bounds were not available. This ASCMO Static test plan is automated and executed on engine test cell with ETAS INCAFlow.
