Cfd Diagnostic Methodology for the Assessment of Mixture Formation Quality in GDI Engines

The fuel injection plays a crucial role in determining the mixture formation process in Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engines. Pollutant emissions, and soot emissions in particular, as well as phenomena affecting engine reliability, such as oil dilution and injector coking, are deeply influenced by the injection system features, such as injector geometric characteristics (such as injector type, injector position and targeting within the combustion chamber) and operating characteristics (such as injection pressure, injection phasing, etc.). In this paper, a new CFD methodology is presented, allowing a preliminary assessment of the mixture formation quality in terms of expected soot emissions, oil dilution and injector coking risks for different injection systems (such as for instance multihole or swirl injectors) and different injection strategies, from the early stages of a new engine design.

Experimental and Numerical Investigation of a Passive Pre-Chamber Jet Ignition Single-Cylinder Engine

In the framework of an increasing demand for a more sustainable mobility, where the fuel consumption reduction is a key driver for the development of innovative internal combustion engines, Turbulent Jet Ignition (TJI) represents one of the most promising solutions to improve the thermal efficiency. However, details concerning turbulent jet assisted combustion are still to be fully captured, and therefore the design and the calibration of efficient TJI systems require the support of reliable simulation tools that can provide additional information not accessible through experiments. To this aim, an experimental investigation combined with a 3D-CFD study was performed to analyze the TJI combustion characteristics in a single-cylinder spark-ignition (SI) engine. Firstly, the model was validated against experiments considering stoichiometric mixture at 3000 rpm, wide open throttle operating conditions.

Experimental and Computational Investigation of a Quarter-Wave Resonator on a Large-Bore Marine Dual-Fuel Engine

Large pressure pulsations and a non-uniform distribution of charge air temperature along the intake manifold were detected on a large-bore marine Dual-Fuel engine. These two phenomena were found to impact negatively on the knock resistance of individual cylinders, when the engine is operated in gas-mode. As it happens with marine gas engines, the cylinder most prone to knocking drives the engine tuning for all the others, thus reducing the overall fuel conversion efficiency. In order to effectively tackle this issue, a comprehensive study was carried out, which included both experimental testing and fluid-dynamics simulation. A detailed GT-POWER 1D engine model was built, representing the laboratory 8L (i.e. inline eight-cylinder) engine configuration. The model was extensively correlated against measurements at different speeds and loads and it proved capable of closely reproducing both the pressure fluctuations and the temperature gradient along the intake manifold.

Development of a Novel Numerical Methodology for the Assessment of Insulating Coating Performance in Internal Combustion Engines

In recent years, the automotive industry has been increasingly committed to developing new solutions for better and more efficient engines. One of them is the use of new insulating materials (thermal conductivity < 0.4 W/m-K, heat capacitance < 500 kJ/m3-K) to coat the engine combustion chamber walls, as well as the exhaust manifold. The main idea when coating the combustion chamber with these materials is to obtain a reduction of the temperature difference (thermal swing) between gas and walls during the engine cycle and minimize heat losses. Experimental measurements of the possible performance improvements are very difficult to obtain, mainly because the techniques available to measure wall temperature are limited. Therefore, simulations are typically used to investigate insulated combustion chambers. Nevertheless, the new generation of insulating coatings is posing challenges to numerical modelling, as layer thickness is very small (~100 μm).
