Experimental Investigation of Dual AC System Used for Battery Cooling Plate

2020-08-18
2020-28-0021
As the global warming due to carbon footprint is very alarming, vehicle emissions are getting stringent day by day. In such situation vehicle hybridization or fully electric vehicles are of obvious choices. However in any of the cases the battery cooling is a big concern area. As the heat produced by the battery need to be dissipated in the long run, it is of utmost need to develop and understand the battery cooling system. Present paper describes the experimental investigation of a battery cooling circuit. A complete bench comprising of both primary and secondary circuit is used for the testing. The primary circuit has a cooling unit with TXV, condenser and electric compressor run by high voltage. The secondary circuit consists of a chiller (integrated with TXV) unit responsible for battery cooling. The whole circuit typically resembles with one of dual air conditioning unit and uses one of known refrigerant used in vehicle AC system.

Vibration has many undesirable and harmful effects on life and performance of mechanical equipment and other structures. The effects of vibration are due to dynamic interaction between vehicles and road, vibration transmitted from machinery to its supporting structures, thereby interfering with their performance, damage as well as malfunction and failure due to dynamic loading, fatigue failure and oscillation of transmission lines. In this paper the authors studied the condenser’s connector used in automotive application under dynamic load using numerical and experimental methods. The authors used finite element modeling technology using Altair Products for numerical modal analysis and verified the same with shaker testing. Authors also carried out the numerical stress analysis using same FEA software and compared the stress values with experimental stain gauge measurements. The authors found that the FEA method agreeing with experimental modal analysis within 10% accuracy.

Performance Optimization of Compressor Rotor Clutch Sub-assembly Using Electro- Magnetic Analysis

2018-04-03
2018-01-0484
Rotor Clutch sub-assembly is one of the very important sub-assemblies (S/A) of an automotive compressor as it delivers the required torque/power to run the compressor. It mainly consists of rotor and bearing, stator, hub and armature. Rotor is rotated by engine pulley through belt drive system, while stator housing has got number of coils winded around stator slot. The hub sub-assembly is attached to the compressor shaft via spline arrangement and bolted across. When direct current (DC) is supplied to the terminal of the rotor, an electromagnetic field is generated which causes to attract the hub part towards rotor. Once the hub and rotor gets engaged each other, torque is transmitted to the compressor shaft which then helps to complete the suction and compression of refrigerant gas and thus making the vapor cycle run to produce adequate cooling in the air-conditioning (AC) system.

The aim of this paper is to analyze Train Driver Cabin AC kit to improve performance of Rail AC unit. First CFD analysis has been carried out on the existing design to find the airflow on the condenser side. Based on the analysis result, design modification has been done to improve the air flow on the condenser side and thereby improving the cooling capacity of the unit. CAE analysis has been carried out to strengthen mount brackets of condenser fan. With the design changes, there is significant improvement found on the structural integrity. Modal frequency improved and dynamic stress been reduced. Based on final modified design, proto was developed, tested and found OK which further verified with CAE/CFD results.CAE analysis has been carried out using ABAQUS/Hypermesh software and CFD using STAR CCM+.
