An Improved Finite Control Set – Model Predictive Control Algorithm for Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor Control Applications

Finite Control Set – Model Predictive Control (FCS – MPC ) has gained attention for motor control applications of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM) drives due to its simplicity in implementation and ability to tackle operational constraints. Traditional proportional-integral (PI) control approaches face deterioration in machine performance due to coupling of d-axis and q- axis current. This complicates the controller design. Specifically for traction applications where IPMSMs are widely used , traditional proportional- integral (PI) control approaches are also unable to make the most of reluctance torque due to salient poles. FCS – MPC solves this problem by directly optimizing inverter states .Steady- state errors can be reduced by using high-gain feedback in this FCS-MPC. Simulation results of closed loop control of FCS – MPC have been illustrated in this paper.
