EGR Distribution in an Intake Manifold: Analysis, Dynamometer Correlation and Prediction

Every passing year automotive engineers are challenged to attain higher fuel economy and improved emission targets. One widely used approach is to use Cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation (CEGR) to meet these objectives. Apart from reducing emissions and improving fuel economy, CEGR also plays a significant role in knock mitigation in spark ignited gasoline engines. Generally, CEGR is introduced into the intake manifold in SI gasoline engine. Even though the benefits of using CEGR are significant, they can be easily negated by the uneven CEGR flow distribution between the cylinders, which can result in combustion instability. This paper describes the application of co-simulation between one and three dimensional tools to accurately predict the distribution of CEGR to the cylinders and the effect of its distribution on engine performance.

Steady and Transient CFD Approach for Port Optimization

The intake and exhaust port design plays a substantial role in performance of combustion systems. The port design determines the volumetric efficiency and in-cylinder charge motion of the spark-ignited engine which influences the thermodynamic properties directly related to the power output, emissions, fuel consumption and NVH properties. Thus intake port has to be appropriately designed to fulfill the required charge motion and high flow performance. While turbulence intensity and air-mixture quality affect dilution tolerance and fuel economy as a result, breathing ability affects wide open throttle performance. Traditional approaches require experimental techniques to reach a target balance between the charge motion and breathing capacity. Such techniques do not necessarily result in an optimized solution.

Charge Motion Analysis to Guide Engine Port Development and Enhance Combustion Stability for High Cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation

CAE tools are increasingly important in the automotive design process. In part, CAE tools can be useful in reducing the number of physical prototypes required during a product development effort. CFD tools can assess and predict cylinder charge motion for proposed designs, thereby limiting the need for prototype work. Though detailed combustion simulation results could help guide product development, the time required for such simulations limits their usefulness in the context of a production program. However equally valuable information can be obtained from gas exchange analyses which require less computation time and are run only from Intake Valve opening (IVO) to spark timing. Chemical kinetics is not included in this type of analysis. Using this approach, large numbers of configurations can be evaluated in a short period of time. Every passing year automotive engineers are challenged to attain higher fuel economy targets.
