Analysis of the In-Cylinder Flow, Mixture Formation and Combustion Processes in a Spray-Guided GDI Engine

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the air/fuel mixture formation and combustion characteristics in a spray-guided GDI engine using a commercial code, STAR-CD. This engine adopted the outwardly opening injector located in the center of cylinder head, which forms a hollow cone spray. The spray injection was modeled arranging multiple points using random function along the ring-shaped nozzle exit. To predict the breakup of spray, Reitz-Diwakar's breakup model was used, and the model constants were calibrated against published experimental data in a constant volume chamber. The validated spray models were applied to the analysis of spray behavior and mixture formation process inside the engine combustion chamber under operating condition of ultra-lean mixture (λ ≈ 4). To predict the combustion process, the modified eddy breakup combustion model was applied.

A New Combustion Model Based on Transport of Mean Reaction Progress Variable in a Spark Ignition Engine

In this study a new model is proposed for turbulent premixed combustion in a spark-ignition engine. An independent transport equation is solved for the mean reaction progress variable in a propagation form in KIVA-3V. An expression for turbulent burning velocity was previously given as a product of turbulent diffusivity in unburned gas, laminar flame speed and maximum flame surface density. The model has similarity with the G equation approach, but originates from zone conditionally averaged formulation for unburned gas. A spark kernel grows initially as a laminar flame and becomes a fully developed turbulent flame brush according to a transition criterion in terms of the kernel size and the integral length scale. Simulation of a homogeneous charge pancake chamber engine showed good agreement with measured flame propagation and pressure trace. The model was also applied against experimental data of Hyundai θ-2.0L SI engine.

Combustion Process Analysis in a HSDI Diesel Engine Using a Reduced Chemical Kinetics

The combustion characteristics of a HSDI diesel engine were analyzed numerically using a reduced chemical kinetics. The reaction mechanism consisting of 26 steps and 17 species including the Zel'dovich NOx mechanism for the higher hydrocarbon fuel was implemented in the KIVA-3V. The characteristic time scale model was adopted to account for the effects of turbulent mixing on the reaction rates. The soot formation and oxidation processes are represented by Hiroyasu's model and NSC's model. The validation cases include the homogenous fuel/air mixture and the spray combustion in a constant volume chamber. After the validation, the present approach was applied to the analysis of the spray combustion processes in a HSDI diesel engine. The present approach reasonably well predicts the ignition delay, combustion processes, and emission characteristics in the high-pressure turbulent spray flame-field encountered in the practical HSDI diesel engines.

Numerical Study of Combustion Processes and Pollutant Formation in HSDI Diesel Engines

The Representative Interactive Flamelet(RIF) concept has been applied to numerically simulate the combustion processes and pollutant formation in the direct injection diesel engine. Due to the ability for interactively describing the transient behaviors of local flame structures with CFD solver, the RIF concept has the capabilities to predict the auto-ignition and subsequent flame propagation in the diesel engine combustion chamber as well as to effectively account for the detailed mechanisms of soot and NOx formation. In order to account for the spatial inhomogeneity of the scalar dissipation rate, the Eulerian Particle Flamelet Model using the multiple flamelets has been employed. Special emphasis is given to the turbulent combustion model which properly accounts for vaporization effects on turbulence-chemistry interaction.

In-Cylinder Flow Field Analysis of a Single Cylinder DI Diesel Engine Using PIV and CFD

We analyzed the in-cylinder flow fields of an optical-access single cylinder diesel engine with the PIV and STAR-CD CFD code. The PIV analysis was carried out in the bottom and side view mode during a compression stroke (ATDC 220°-340°) at 600 rpm. The flow pattern traced by the streamlines, the location of vortex center, the generation and disappearance of tumble, and the squish effect agreed well, as visualized by the PIV and CFD. Vorticity and spatial fluctuation intensities abruptly increased from ATDC 310, reflecting more complicated flow pattern as approaching TDC. In a quantitative sense, the velocity magnitudes obtained from the PIV were, on an average, higher than those from the CFD by 1 m/s approximately and the difference in velocity magnitude between them was about 26 %. In the CFD analysis, the standard high Reynolds κ-ε and RNG k-ε model were adopted for calculation with tetra and hexa or their hybrid meshes, to determine the turbulence model dependencies.

Effects of Injection Conditions on Mixture Formation Process in a Premixed Compression Ignition Engine

The mixture formation process in a premixed compression ignition engine was numerically analyzed. This study aimed to find out effective injection conditions for lean mixture formation with high homogeneity, since the NOx and soot emissions in the engine are closely related to the mixture homogeneity. To calculate fuel spray behavior, a practical computer code GTT (Generalized Tank and Tube) was employed. In a model for the premixed compression ignition engine, the effects of injection parameters, such as injection timing, initial droplet size, spray angle, injection velocity, nozzle type (pintle and hole) and injection position / direction, on the mixture homogeneity near ignition timing (or TDC) were investigated. To evaluate the homogeneity of the mixture, an index was defined based on the spatial distribution of fuel mass fraction. The fuel vapor mass fractions as well as the homogeneity indices, obtained as a function of time, were compared under various boundary conditions.

Effects of Initial In-Cylinder Flow Field on Mixture Formation in a Premixed Compression Ignition Engine

To find more effective lean mixture preparation methods for smokeless and low NOx combustion, a numerical study of the effects of in-cylinder flow field before injection on mixture formation in a premixed compression ignition engine was conducted. Premixed compression ignition combustion is a very attractive method to reduce both NOx and soot emissions, but it still has some problems, such as high HC and CO emissions. In case of early direct injection, it is important to avoid wall wetting by spray impingement, which can cause higher HC and CO emissions. Since it is not easy to examine the effects of initial flow and injection parameters on mixture formation over the wide range by practical engine tests, a computer program named “GTT (Generalized Tank and Tube)” code was used to simulate the in-cylinder phenomena before autoignition.

Comparison of Spray Characteristics in Butane and Diesel Fuels by Numerical Analysis

The spray characteristics of n-butane were analyzed numerically using KIVA-3V code and compared with those of diesel under the same boundary conditions. The transient behavior of hollow cone spray was calculated not only in a constant volume chamber under various ambient conditions, but also in a premixed compression ignition engine. The spray characteristics were evaluated in terms of spray tip penetration and droplet size distribution. Various atomization sub-models such as TAB, Wave breakup and Wave-KH (Kelvin-Helmholtz) model were implemented in the code and validated by comparison with experimental data. The results show that mixture formation for butane proceeds faster than diesel fuel primarily due to a higher evaporation rate caused by butane's higher diffusivity in air. Furthermore, in a premixed compression ignition engine, the mixture of butane becomes more homogeneous than diesel by the end of compression stroke.
