Emission Performance Improvements with Turbulent Metal Substrates on 2 & 3 Wheelers

Two and Three Wheeler industry in the Asian region is growing at a rapid pace, as commuting by these vehicles is more affordable and efficient, specially in the developing nations. However, tightening of emission legislations, aimed at creating a cleaner and healthier environment, has led to increasingly demanding efforts required in making more efficient engines / vehicles and also focus on effective after-treatment systems. Catalytic converters, being the most preferred option for after-treatment solutions, play an important role in achieving the desired end results. Over the past several years, monolithic catalytic converters with laminar flow profile were being used by automotive industry. These catalytic converters though create some turbulence at the inlet, make the majority of the rest of the flow laminar, thereby reducing the mass transfer of the exhaust gas components to the effective catalytic sites.

System Development Concepts for Future Indian Passenger Car Legislations and Related Catalyst Technologies

World over, emission legislations are becoming stringent day by day. India too, is on the road map for more tough emission legislations. 2/3 Wheeler legislations in India are being considered as the most stringent in the world, where as, Passenger Car and light/heavy duty legislations are reaching Euro III and Euro IV limits in the near future. The present paper describes the system concepts to be followed to reach the emission targets, specially for Euro III and Euro IV for passenger cars. That includes necessity for using more advanced engine technologies such as Turbo Charging with Intercooling, EGR (cooled), Electronically Controlled Direct Injection, Common Rail / Pump - Nozzle systems. The new catalyst technologies required and developed for these applications are described. These technologies not only require to offer efficient emission reduction under fresh conditions, but need to meet the targeted results after long aging of over 80,000 km. The paper is divided in two parts.

Application of a LS Metal Catalyst Substrate for BS IV Two and Three Wheelers

Affordable, efficient and durable catalytic converters for the two and three wheeler industry in developing countries are required to reduce vehicle emissions and to maintain them at a low level; and therefore to participate in a cleaner and healthier environment. The LS-Design™(Longitudinal Structure) metallic substrates with LS foils have been proved to be capable of improving conversion behavior, even with smaller catalyst size. Specially this developed foil structure, which transforms a laminar exhaust gas flow into a turbulent one, significantly improves exhaust gas mixing behaviour in the catalyst. In this special period of time where BS4 applications will start appearing in the Indian market in the near future, this publication will deal with the experimental results achieved with different metallic substrate foil structures on one leading “state of the art” BS3 four stroke motorcycle technology, developed for the Indian market.
