Controllable Electric Oil Pumps in Heavy Duty Diesel Engines

2003-11-10
2003-01-3421
One way for the OEMs to improve engine and vehicle efficiency is through the reduction of engine parasitic loads. The engine oil pump is one source of parasitic load, and is driving new engine lubrication pump designs. Mechanically driven positive displacement engine oil lubrication pumps have been the standard for over 100 years. A controllable oil pump capable of providing varied flow based on the engine operating conditions is one potential solution. This paper addresses some of the issues and opportunities uncovered during the development of electrically driven oil pumps.

Parasitic Loss Reduction for 21st Century Trucks

2000-12-04
2000-01-3423
To reach its objective of reducing vehicle fuel consumption by 50 percent, the development of the 21st Century Truck (21T) will address all the aspects of truck design contributing to the achievement of that goal. [1] This paper will address one of these aspects, specifically vehicle parasitic loss reduction with special emphasis on drive train losses, concentrating on the potential benefits of replacing mechanical coolant (water) and oil pumps with electrically powered pumps.
