A Model Based Control Strategy for an Electric Power Assisted Steering

Automotive industry is looking for new design and product development practices to become more competitive. Challenges in current global market have often included sustainable development, environmental regulation and innovative solution to reach customer needs. Today, carmakers are striving to take competitive advantages over global marketplace. Model-Based-Design (MBD) seems to be a feasible answer to improve software development practices in automotive industry. Furthermore, it has been reported as a novel development approach to develop advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). Among ADAS technologies often required to reduce driver fatigue is Electric Power Assisted Steering (EPAS). By using an auxiliary servomotor, it can reduce significantly driver effort in parking maneuvers. In this scenario, this paper aims to describe how MBD can be used to design EPAS control system.

Model Based Design for Automobile External Lighting Systems

Model-Based Design (MBD) has been widely used for automotive embedded software design. Automobile manufacturers and suppliers have often underlined the importance of an unified approach for electrical and electronic (E/E) system design. In this scenario, MBD can provide a mutual benefit for stakeholders due to the share of information, workflow, and tool-chain. In this paper, we highlight MBD application for automotive Exterior Lighting System (ELS) design. In fact, ELS is an event-driven control system typically needed for car lighting and signalization, in particular at night. Furthermore, this system is mandatory for every road vehicle according to current Brazilian laws and legislation. Also, it provides safety drive preventing car accidents and pedestrian injury. In this context, we present how to boost ELS design using MBD concepts. ELS was developed in three MBD workflow (Model-In-the-Loop, Software-In-the-Loop, and Processor-In-the-Loop), from supplier’s viewpoint.

Low-Cost Platform for Automobile Software Development

This paper shows the design of a low-cost platform for learning automobile software development in high education and research institutions. In a host-target development scheme, the platform is made up of software and hardware components. The development platform supplies the required tool-chain to design and implement ECU embedded software. Moreover, the execution platform provides a hardware solution to emulate automobile E/E architectures. The overall setup aims to explain the automobile software development process over V-cycle including analysis of user requirements, logical and technical system architecture, design, and implementation of software components and testing. The capabilities and limitations of our proposed low-cost platform were also investigated throughout three experiments using the OSEK-VDX standard and Model-Based Design (MBD) concept.
