Development of CO2 Remover for Aircraft Advanced ECS

2006-07-17
2006-01-2200
The Carbon Dioxide (CO2) remover of the next generation that composes Aircraft Advanced Environmental Control System (ECS) is developed. The trial manufacture of adsorption element made of Metal Foil and adsorption module body were conducted. And the CO2 adsorption/desorption ability was examined. The micro porous was formed on the surface of the metal foil by the anodic oxidation method, and amine system organic compound was supported in the porous to add the selective adsorption function for low concentration of CO2. The CO2 adsorptive separation performance was 0.2×10−3kg/m2 by the thermogravimetry examination result. In performance test with adsorption module, it was demonstrated to be able to purify the CO2 concentration to 0.04vol% or less in cabin air by the adsorption/regeneration examination that assumed the entrance CO2 concentration 0.2vol% and the 6 minutes cycle.

To support sustained manned activities in an enclosed environment in space vehicles such as the Space Station (SS), a respirable air supply system is essential and optimization should be aimed at in the design of such a system. For cabin air revitalization, it is indispensable to remove carbon dioxide (CO2) and other gaseous contaminants generated from crew and/or non-metalic materials to prevent them from accumulating. In addition to the above functions, oxygen (O2) recovery function using trapped CO2 is indispensable for the Air Revitalization System (ARS) because a reduction of resupply materials from ground is strictly required. This paper presents and an outline of a feasibility study of the ARS in which system optimization is made.
