Many of the engines used in Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA), come directly from the remote-control (R/C) aircraft market, which turn a propeller but are not necessarily built for the greatest efficiency or reduced fuel consumption. The DoD “single fuel concept” is pushing these platforms to be able to operate with JP-8 using an Otto Cycle engine. Additionally, with increased environmental concern with fossil fuels, possible future DoD requirements could require the use of bio-derived liquid fuels. The research presented in this paper takes steps to satisfying both the efficiency and single fuel requirements. The Fuji BF-34EI engine was successfully shown to operate effectively with JP-8, Diesel, Algae-based Diesel and Camelina based Hydroprocessed Renewable Jet fuel. When generally compared over the entire engine operating map, between AVGAS and JP-8, the latter is shown to present a 10-20% lower brake specific fuel consumption (BSFC).

Flame images are collected and Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) coupled with interpolation is applied to reconstruct information in between consecutive measurements. The POD basis is determined from samples (“snapshots”) taken during experiments conducted on an optically accessible Spark Ignition Engine. Reconstructed luminosity fields are then compared with the available (but not used in the computations) experimental data. In a second application, dynamic in-cylinder pressure data collected together with images are compared to those of a “base” cycle and the differences are used to weight the “snapshots” collected over different cycles. By this means, pseudo-cycle-resolved image sequences can be obtained.

For a disaster relief and automatic inspections, an unmanned helicopter is strongly expected. To develop this, a very high power density source is required. A Wankel-type rotary engine can be the best candidate for the power source. In this study, the development of a very small rotary engine with a displacement of 30 cc is targeted. In order to improve the combustion efficiency, gas exchange and stable ignition, a multi dimensional simulation inside the combustion chamber was carried out. At first, the effect of volumetric efficiency on the maximum power is mentioned. Secondly, the effect of scavenging efficiency is discussed. Thirdly, a blow off through a plug hole is described. The position of plug hole was found important to reduce the blow off amount. Finally, the effect of combustion speed on the engine performance is predicted. As a result, the proposed design will be tested using a proto-type engine.

Light weight, high speed, compact power transmission shafts transmit torque through diaphragm type flexible discs whose planes are normal to the torque axis. The angular and axial misalignments are obtained by material flexure of these thin diaphragms within elastic limits. These shafts have multiple diaphragms used in series so that each diaphragm shares a portion of the total misalignment. Such shafts are used in high speed aircraft coupling engine mounted accessory gear box and aircraft mounted accessory gearbox. This paper deals with the design and development of light weight flexible power transmission shaft for high speed fighter aircraft application keeping critical speeds and weight as the design criteria. Since the number of design constraints is more, finite element analysis has been used as an effective tool for trying out various design iterations so that all the design constraints are met.

The modern automobile engine has enjoyed more than a century of continuous development dating back to 1878, when the German engineer, Dr. Nicholas August Otto exhibited his first four-cycle engine. The quests for positive displacement rotary piston machines have attracted the attention of several centuries and actually pre-date the invention of the reciprocat ing piston principles.
