Smart and Compact Simulation Tool for Electric Vehicle Component Sizing

Electric Vehicles (EVs), with its inherent advantage of zero tailpipe emissions, are gaining importance because of aggressive push from government not only to reduce air pollution but also to reduce dependency of fossil fuel. EVs and necessary charging infrastructure along with ‘connected’ technology is redefining mobility. Considering the fast growing EV market, it becomes important for an EV Powertrain Architect to design and develop a powertrain solution having low engineering efforts and satisfying business, market and regulatory requirements at a competitive price. This paper presents a compact, flexible, convenient and smart featured simulation tool for an EV Powertrain Architect for estimating the specifications of key powertrain components such as traction battery and electric motor. The proposed tool takes into consideration the end-user as well as the regulatory requirements of range, maximum speed, acceleration and gradeability.

Development of Multi Cylinder Turbocharged Natural Gas Engine for Heavy Duty Application

CNG has recently seen increased penetration within the automotive industry. Due to recent sanctions on diesel fuelled vehicles, manufactures have again shifted their attention to natural gas as a suitable alternative. Turbocharging of SI engines has seen widespread application due to its benefit in terms of engine downsizing and increasing engine performance [1]. This paper discusses the methodology involved in development of a multi cylinder turbocharged natural gas engine from an existing diesel engine. Various parameters such as valve timing, intake volume, runner length, etc. were studied using 1D simulation tool GT power and based on their results an optimized configuration was selected and a proto engine was built. Electronic throttle body was used to give better transient performance and emission control. Turbocharger selection and its location plays a critical role.

The function of the automotive transmission is to reliably transmit torque and motion between engine and wheels at acceptable levels of noise, vibration and desired life. Gear drive components most commonly subject to distress are the gears, shafts, bearings and seals. The variables in the entire power-system, such as vibration, misalignment, type of lubricant used, material properties, operating temperature and abuse are considered as the main root causes for the gear failures. The bending and contact strength of the gear tooth are considered to be one of the main contributors for the failure of the gear in a gear set. Thus, Heartzian stress analysis has become popular as an area of research on gears to minimize or to reduce the failures of gears. In this research work, one of the major field issues related to 1st gear and reverse gear pitting at very low life for 6 speed manual transmission for mining/ quarry application is studied.

Pass-By Noise Reduction of Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV)

The increasing in popularity of Light Commercial Vehicles (LCV) segment is an emerging trend in the commercial vehicle industry. LCVs are very efficient and cost-effective for transportation of materials and good on short distances or loads of lesser weights. Sensing the market potential, many auto companies have developed LCVs recently. Since LCV segment is price sensitive, low cost single cylinder water cooled diesel engine being used as prime mover. High noise & vibration is inherent feature of diesel engine & it is predominant in single cylinder diesel engine. In order to retain low cost of product, less attention is given on overall noise of vehicle. Also, it is challenging to meet the regulatory limits of Pass-by Noise (PBN) for this category of vehicle. This paper is a development work done for pass-by noise reduction of a diesel powered single cylinder LCV vehicle. A prototype vehicle needs to meet the legislative pass-by noise requirement when tested as per IS0 362 / IS 3028.

Biodiesel from Microalgae

Microalgae as feedstock are the potential third generation biofuels. Microalgae are photosynthetic microorganism which requires light, carbon-di-oxide, nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium for growth and to produce lipids, proteins and carbohydrates in large amounts over short a periods of time. The production of biofuels from microalgal is a viable alternative due to their easy adaptability to growth conditions, possibility of growing biomass either in fresh or marine waters. Hence the current project was designed to elucidate the biodiesel producing ability of blue-green algae such as Spirulina platensis and Green algae Chlorella vulgaris. The selected algae were cultivated in suitable growth media such as modified Zarrouke medium and bold basal medium, respectively. The Spirulina platensis and Chlorella vulgaris were mass cultured for 8 days then harvested using 50 micron nylon filters and dried in sunlight to obtain dry biomass.

The Light commercial vehicle (LCV) is primarily used for the last mile delivery and it hold the volume share of around 61% in the commercial vehicle segment. The last mile delivery services have seen a massive surge after the CoVID 19 pandemic resulting is the increase sale of LCV in last few years and is expected to grow further by 8-11% in the coming years. However, city logistic is also responsible for most pollution and noise in the city. Hence, policymakers are aiming to reduce carbon footprint by promoting the use of Electric vehicle by providing incentive to automakers though schemes like FAME I and FAME II. In order to effectively reduce the carbon footprint within city it is important to increase the use of new electric vehicle and convert the old polluting vehicles to electric. Hence, a retro fitment solution for converting used LCV to electric can help in reducing emission as well as noise pollution. Later the same solution can be offered as OE fitment solution.

Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine Strategies for Heavy-Duty Transportation: Engine and System Level Perspective

Hydrogen internal combustion engines (H2ICE) offer a cost-effective solution to decarbonize transport by combining a lower carbon intensity fuel with mature and established internal combustion engine technology. While vehicles running with hydrogen have been demonstrated over the years, this fuel's physical and chemical properties require modifications and upgrades on the vehicle from an engine and system-level perspective. In addition, market-specific regulatory and economic factors can also constrain the realization of optimal hydrogen powertrain architectures. Therefore, this paper reviews the impact of hydrogen use on combustion, injection, air management, and after-treatment systems, indicating the different strategies used to enable effective H2ICE strategies from an efficiency, cost, and safety standpoint.
