Air Filter Element Test Method

This SAE test method establishes a uniform test procedure for determining the gravimetric (mass based) efficiency and pressure drop performance levels of operator enclosure panel type filters on off-road, self-propelled work machines used in earth moving, and forestry, as defined in SAE J1116 and for agricultural equipment as defined in ANSI/ASAE S390, and equipped with an operator enclosure with a powered fresh air system. ISO/TS 11155-1 may additionally be used, which describes the use of particle sizing devices to measure the fractional (particle size) efficiency of panel type filters for automotive cabin filter applications. Automotive cabin filters are similar to filters described in this procedure, and the ISO/TS 11155-1 test method is therefore directly applicable.

It is hoped that it will constitute a concise reference of the important characteristics of selected cast and wrought ferrous materials available for this application, as well as methods employed for manufacturing. The different types of manifolds used in current engine designs are discussed, along with their range of applicability. Finally, a general description of mechanical, chemical, and thermophysical properties of commonly-used alloys is provided, along with discussions on the importance of such properties.

The scope of this document focuses on the setup and use of solid particle number (SPN) counting devices in both engine development and certification environments. The document reviews best practices for collecting and measuring samples from both raw and diluted exhaust gas streams across several sample probe insertion locations relative to installed aftertreatment devices. Appropriate dilution techniques, sample transfer processes, and temperature management techniques are included. Finally, performance and validation checks are covered to ensure that long-term degradation and instrument failures can be identified quickly. The particle size range targeted in this document is >23 nm, which aligns with the present EU SPN regulations and targets only solid particles. Current commonly available measurement devices are designed for counting efficiencies of 50% at 23 nm and 90% counting efficiencies at 40 nm so the contents of this document primarily address these particle sizes.

This SAE Recommended Practice describes the implementation of Enhanced Diagnostic Test Modes, which are intended to supplement the legislated Diagnostic Test Modes defined in SAE J1979. Modes are defined for access to emission related test data beyond what is included in SAE J1979, and for non-emission related data. This document describes the data byte values for diagnostic messages transmitted between diagnostic test equipment, either on-vehicle or off-vehicle, and vehicle electronic control modules. No distinction is made between test modes for emission related and non-emission related diagnostics. These messages can be used with a diagnostic serial data link such as described in SAE J1850 or ISO 9141-2. For each test mode, this document includes a functional description of the test mode, request and report message data byte content, and an example if useful for clarification.

The scope of this document focuses on the tests required by EPA to validate the performance of the FTIR system following the section in the Code of Federal Regulations Part 1065 (40CFR1U.1065 and hereafter referred to as “EPA Part 1065”) on the guidelines and performance criteria for various regulated gases. This document focuses on the use of continuous emissions sampling for both Engine and Vehicle testing. Future addenda will be needed to cover bag and other sampling techniques. Gas components that do not currently have performance criteria but may soon be regulated are noted and EPA suggestions as to what should be required are applied. This will help ensure that the FTIR will be recognized as a valid and alternative tool for engine exhaust emissions testing. Components in engine exhaust that are specifically called out in this document include: carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), oxides of nitrogen (NO, NO2 and N2O), ammonia (NH3), methane (CH4), and formaldehyde (H2CO).
