This SAE Recommended Practice has been set up by Subcommittee 4 of the Off-Road Machinery Technical Committee and is primarily for directional control valves on construction and industrial machinery equipment as referenced in SAE J1116. The purpose is to establish port area to flow relationship and match valve spool eye ends in relation to rated capacity. Port connections are optional for either the 4-bolt split flange connection or the internal straight thread "O" ring connection.

This procedure describes laboratory tests for establishing operating characteristics of hydraulic directional control valves used on mobile industrial and construction equipment as referenced in SAE J1116. These characteristics are to be recorded on data sheets similar to those shown herein. Two sets of data are to be submitted--one at 122°F (50°C) and one at 194°F (90°C). A separate set of data sheets is to be submitted for the cylinder ports closest to, and farthest from the inlet and outlet ports of a multiple section valve.

This SAE Standard applies to hydraulic directional control valves as applied to self-propelled work machines referenced in SAE J1116. It describes a laboratory test procedure for evaluating: a.) Flow versus pressure drop, b.) Leakage rate, c.) Operating effort, d.) Metering characteristics versus spool travel, pilot pressure, or electrical current, e.) Relief valve characteristics. This document applies to single and multiple section hydraulic directional control valves. This document illustrates axial, manually operated valves although the test procedure is applicable to other input forms such as rotary actuation, electric current, hydraulic or pneumatic pressure.
