Ducted Fuel Injection: Confirmed Re-entrainment Hypothesis

Testing of ducted fuel injection (DFI) in a single-cylinder engine with production-like hardware previously showed that adding a duct structure increased soot emissions at the full load, rated speed operating point [1]. The authors hypothesized that the DFI flame, which travels faster than a conventional diesel combustion (CDC) flame, and has a shorter distance to travel, was being re-entrained into the on-going fuel injection around the lift-off length (LOL), thus reducing air entrainment into the on-going injection. The engine operating condition and the engine combustion chamber geometry were duplicated in a constant pressure vessel. The experimental setup used a 3D piston section combined with a glass fire deck allowing for a comparison between a CDC flame and a DFI flame via high-speed imaging. CH* imaging of the 3D piston profile view clearly confirmed the re-entrainment hypothesis presented in the previous engine work.

Impact of a Split-Injection Strategy on Energy-Assisted Compression-Ignition Combustion with Low Cetane Number Sustainable Aviation Fuels

The influence of a split-injection strategy on energy-assisted compression-ignition (EACI) combustion of low-cetane number sustainable aviation fuels was investigated in a single-cylinder direct-injection compression-ignition engine using a ceramic ignition assistant (IA). Two low-cetane number fuels were studied: a low-cetane number alcohol-to-jet (ATJ) sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) with a derived cetane number (DCN) of 17.4 and a binary blend of ATJ with F24 (Jet-A fuel with military additives, DCN 45.8) with a blend DCN of 25.9 (25 vol.% F24, 75 vol.% ATJ). A pilot injection mass sweep (3.5-7.0 mg) with constant total injection mass and an injection dwell sweep (1.5-3.0 ms) with fixed main injection timing was performed. Increasing pilot injection mass was found to reduce cycle-to-cycle combustion phasing variability by promoting a shorter and more repeatable combustion event for the main injection with a shorter ignition delay.

Zero Emission Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine for a 5 kW Mobile Power Generator: Conversion Strategy for Carburetted SI Engines

A carburetted, spark ignited gasoline fuelled engine of a 5 kW rated power generator was converted to run on hydrogen. As opposed to large parts of current research, the engine conversion’s foremost goal was not to maximise efficiency and power output but rather to find a cost-effective and low-complexity conversion approach to introduce clean fuels to existing engines. To allow for the increased volumetric fuel flow, the riser of the original carburettor was enlarged. The hydrogen flow into the venturi was metered with the help of a pressure regulator from a widely available conversion kit. The effects of different hydrogen-fuel-feed pressures on engine performance, operational stability and emission levels were examined experimentally. It was found that the hydrogen-line pressure before startup has to be set precisely (±5 mbar) to allow for stable and emission free operation.

Investigation of Premixed Fuel Composition and Pilot Reactivity Impact on Diesel Pilot Ignition in a Single-Cylinder Compression Ignition Engine

This work experimentally investigates the impact of premixed fuel composition (methane/ethane, methane/propane, and methane/hydrogen mixtures having equivalent chemical energy) and pilot reactivity (cetane number) on diesel-pilot injection (DPI) combustion performance and emissions, with an emphasis on the pilot ignition delay (ID). To support the experimental pilot ignition delay trends, an analysis technique known as Mixing Line Concept (MLC) was adopted, where the cold diesel surrogate and hot premixed charge are envisioned to mix in a 0-D constant volume reactor to account for DPI mixture stratification. The results show that the dominant effect on pilot ignition is the pilot fuel cetane number, and that the premixed fuel composition plays a minor role. There is some indication of a physical effect on ignition for cases containing premixed hydrogen.

Exploration of Fuel Property Impacts on the Combustion of Late Post Injections Using Binary Blends and High-Reactivity Ether Bioblendstocks

In this study, the impacts of fuel volatility and reactivity on combustion stability and emissions were studied in a light-duty single-cylinder research engine for a three-injection catalyst heating operation strategy with late post-injections. N-heptane and blends of farnesane/2,2,4,4,6,8,8-heptamethylnonane were used to study the impacts of volatility and reactivity. The effect of increased chemical reactivity was also analysed by comparing the baseline #2 diesel operation with a pure blend of mono-ether components (CN > 100) representative of potential high cetane oxygenated bioblendstocks and a 25 vol.% blend of the mono-ether blend and #2 diesel with a cetane number (CN) of 55. At constant reactivity, little to no variation in combustion performance was observed due to differences in volatility, whereas increased reactivity improved combustion stability and efficiency at late injection timings.

Combined Impacts of Engine Speed and Fuel Reactivity on Energy-Assisted Compression-Ignition Operation with Sustainable Aviation Fuels

The combined impacts of engine speed and fuel reactivity on energy-assisted compression-ignition (EACI) combustion using a commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) ceramic glow plug for low-load operation werexxz investigated. The COTS glow plug, used as the ignition assistant (IA), was overdriven beyond its conventional operation range. Engine speed was varied from 1200 RPM to 2100 RPM. Three fuel blends consisting of a jet-A fuel with military additives (F24) and a low cetane number alcohol-to-jet (ATJ) sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) were tested with cetane numbers (CN) of 25.9, 35.5, and 48.5. The ranges of engine speed and fuel cetane numbers studied are significantly larger than those in previous studies of EACI or glow-plug assisted combustion, and the simultaneous variation of engine speed and fuel reactivity are unique to this work. For each speed and fuel, a single-injection of fixed mass was used and the start of injection (SOI) was swept for each IA power.

Non-Intrusive Accelerometer-Based Sensing of Start-Of-Combustion in Compression-Ignition Engines

A non-intrusive sensing technique to determine start of combustion for mixing-controlled compression-ignition engines was developed based on an accelerometer mounted to the engine block of a 4-cylinder automotive turbo-diesel engine. The sensing approach is based on a physics-based conceptual model for the signal generation process that relates engine block acceleration to the time derivative of heat release rate. The frequency content of the acceleration and pressure signals was analyzed using the magnitude-squared coherence, and a suitable filtering technique for the acceleration signal was selected based on the result. A method to determine start of combustion (SOC) from the acceleration measurements is presented and validated.

Prediction of Electric Vehicle Transmission Efficiency Using a New Thermally Coupled Lubrication Model

We present a new method to predict the power losses in electric vehicle (EV) transmission systems using a thermally coupled gearbox efficiency model. Friction losses in gear teeth contacts are predicted using an iterative procedure to account for the thermal coupling between the tooth temperature, oil viscosity, film thickness, friction, and oil rheology during a gear mesh cycle. Crucially, the prediction of the evolution of the coefficient of friction (COF) along the path of contact incorporates measured lubricant rheological parameters as well as measured boundary friction. This allows the model to differentiate between nominally similar lubricants in terms of their impact on EV transmission efficiency. Bearing and gear churning losses are predicted using existing empirical relationships. The effects of EV motor cooling and heat transfers in the heat exchanger on oil temperature are considered.

Ducted Fuel Injection: An Experimental Study on Optimal Duct Size

Ducted fuel injection (DFI), a concept that utilizes fuel injection through ducts, was implemented in a constant pressure High Temperature Pressure Vessel at 60 bar ambient pressure, 800-1000 K ambient temperature, and 21 % oxygen. The ducts were 14 mm long and placed 3-4.7 mm from the orifice exit. The duct diameters ranged from 1.6-3.2 mm and had a rounded inlet and a tapered outlet. Diesel fuel was used in single-orifice fuel injectors operating at 250 MPa rail pressure. The objective of this work was to study soot reduction for various combinations of orifice and duct diameters. A complete data set was taken using the 150 μm orifice. A smaller data set was acquired for a 219 μm orifice, showing similar trends. Soot reduction peaked at an optimal duct diameter of 2-2.25 mm, corresponding to an 85-90 % spray area reduction for the 150 μm orifice. Smaller or larger duct diameters were less effective. Duct diameter had a minimal effect on ignition delay.

Effects of Port Angle on Scavenging of an Opposed Piston Two-Stroke Engine

Opposed-piston 2-stroke (OP-2S) engines have the potential to achieve higher thermal efficiency than a typical diesel engine. However, the uniflow scavenging process is difficult to control over a wide range of speeds and loads. Scavenging performance is highly sensitive to pressure dynamics, port timings, and port design. This study proposes an analysis of the effects of port vane angle on the scavenging performance of an opposed-piston 2-stroke engine via simulation. A CFD model of a three-cylinder opposed-piston 2-stroke was developed and validated against experimental data collected by Achates Power Inc. One of the three cylinders was then isolated in a new model and simulated using cycle-averaged and cylinder-averaged initial/boundary conditions. This isolated cylinder model was used to efficiently sweep port angles from 12 degrees to 29 degrees at different pressure ratios.

Fuel Additive Transport into Engine Oil Determination using Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF) and Liquid Chromatography (LC)

The transport of fuel-borne additives into the engine oil is a critical factor for the efficacy with which the additive functionality can be imparted on the engine. This paper describes the combination of Laser Induced Fluorescence (LIF) and Liquid Chromatography (LC) to determine the real-time additive concentrations and transfer ratios in a spark-ignition, 2-liter GM LHU engine. The current research used a continuous sample circuit from the engine sump which passed through an integrating cavity flow cell to enhance the LIF signal. In the absence of a fluorescence signature of any of the native additive species, a suitable fluorescing dye was selected to simulate the additive. After establishing rigorous calibration curves, LC was employed as a referee method to do a direct comparison with the LIF determined dye concentrations.

Performance and Emission Results from a Heavy-Duty Diesel Engine with Ducted Fuel Injection

Ducted fuel injection (DFI) was tested for the first time in a heavy-duty diesel metal engine. It was implemented on a Caterpillar 2.5-liter single-cylinder heavy-duty diesel engine fitted with a common rail fuel system and a Tier 4 final production piston. Engine tests consisted of single-injection timing sweeps at A100 and C100, where rail pressure and exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) were also varied. A 6-hole fuel injector tip with 205 am orifices was used with a 130° spray angle and rail pressures up to 250 MPa. The ducts were 14 mm long, had a 2.5 mm inner diameter, and were placed 3.8 mm away from the orifice exits. The ducts were attached to a base, which in turn was attached to the cylinder head with bolts. Furthermore, alignment of the ducts and their corresponding fuel jets was accomplished.

A Hybrid Heavy-Duty Diesel Power System for Off-Road Applications - Concept Definition

A multi-year Power System R&D project was initiated with the objective of developing an off-road hybrid heavy-duty concept diesel engine with front end accessory drive-integrated energy storage. This off-road hybrid engine system is expected to deliver 15-20% reduction in fuel consumption over current Tier 4 Final-based diesel engines and consists of a downsized heavy-duty diesel engine containing advanced combustion technologies, capable of elevated peak cylinder pressures and thermal efficiencies, exhaust waste heat recovery via SuperTurbo™ turbocompounding, and hybrid energy recovery through both mechanical (high speed flywheel) and electrical systems. The first year of this project focused on the definition of the hybrid elements using extensive dynamic system simulation over transient work cycles, with hybrid supervisory controls development focusing on energy recovery and transient load assist, in Caterpillar’s DYNASTY™ software environment.

Assessment of In-Cylinder Thermal Barrier Coatings over a Full Vehicle Drive Cycle

In-cylinder thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) have the capability to reduce fuel consumption by reducing wall heat transfer and to increase exhaust enthalpy. Low thermal conductivity, low volumetric heat capacity thermal barrier coatings tend to reduce the gas-wall temperature difference, the driving potential for heat transfer from the gas to the combustion chamber surfaces. This paper presents a coupling between an analytical methodology for multi-layer coated wall surface temperature prediction with a fully calibrated production model in a commercial system-level simulation software package (GT-Power). The wall surface temperature at each time step was calculated efficiently by convolving the engine wall response function with the time-varying surface boundary condition, i. e., in-cylinder heat flux and coolant temperature. This tool allows the wall to be treated either as spatially uniform with one set of properties, or with independent head/piston/liner components.

Improved Method for Studying MCCI Flame Interactions with an Engine Combustion Chamber

An improved method for studying mixing-controlled compression ignition (MCCI) flame interactions with an engine combustion chamber has been developed. It is implemented in a constant pressure vessel, which contains a portion of a piston and a portion of a cylinder head, where the cylinder head is emulated by a transparent fused silica window. This method allows for vaporizing or combusting fuel jets to be imaged from two orthogonal directions. The piston and cylinder head can be adjusted to emulate in-engine piston positions from top dead center (TDC) to approximately 15 mm away from TDC. The design allows for pistons from engine bore sizes up to approximately 175 mm to be studied, including the ability to simulate injector spray included angles from 120°-180°. In this study, the piston was made as an extruded piston bowl profile, where the length of the extrusion approximated the arc length between two neighboring jets from a 6-hole injector.

Parallel Load Balancing Strategies for Mesh-Independent Spray Vaporization and Collision Models

Appropriate spray modeling in multidimensional simulations of diesel engines is well known to affect the overall accuracy of the results. More and more accurate models are being developed to deal with drop dynamics, breakup, collisions, and vaporization/multiphase processes; the latter ones being the most computationally demanding. In fact, in parallel calculations, the droplets occupy a physical region of the in-cylinder domain, which is generally very different than the topology-driven finite-volume mesh decomposition. This makes the CPU decomposition of the spray cloud severely uneven when many CPUs are employed, yielding poor parallel performance of the spray computation. Furthermore, mesh-independent models such as collision calculations require checking of each possible droplet pair, which leads to a practically intractable O(np2/2) computational cost, np being the total number of droplets in the spray cloud, and additional overhead for parallel communications.

Investigation of the Relative Performance of Vaned and Vaneless Mixed Flow Turbines for Medium and Heavy-Duty Diesel Engine Applications with Pulse Exhaust Systems

This paper details results of a numerical and experimental investigation into the relative performance of vaned and vaneless mixed flow turbines for application to medium and heavy-duty diesel engines utilizing pulse exhaust systems. Previous investigations into the impact of nozzle vanes on turbine performance considered only open turbine housings, whereas a majority of medium and heavy-duty diesel engine applications are six-cylinder engines using pulse exhaust systems with divided turbines. The two turbine stages for this investigation were carefully designed to meet the constraints of engines with pulse exhaust systems and to control confounding factors that would undermine the vaned vs vaneless performance comparison. Detailed CFD analysis and turbine dynamometer test results confirm a significant efficiency advantage for the vaned turbine stage under both full and partial admission conditions.

Active Limitation of Tire Wear and Emissions for Electrified Vehicles

Eliminating toxic exhaust emissions, amongst them particulate matter (PM), is one of the driving factors behind the increasing use of electrified vehicles. However, it is frequently overseen that PM arise not only from combustion, but from non-exhaust traffic related causes as well; in particular from the vehicle brakes, tires and the road surface. Furthermore, as electrified vehicles weigh more and typically exhibit higher torques at low speeds, their non-exhaust emissions tend to be higher than for comparable conventional vehicles, especially those generated by tires. Fortunately, tire related emissions are directly related to tire wear, so that limiting tire wear can reduce these emissions as well. This can be accomplished by intelligently modulating the vehicle torque profile in real time, to limit the operation in conditions of higher tire wear.

Impacts of particulate matter emissions from a highway on the neighboring population

The road freight transport sector is one of the main responsible for the air pollution (as the case of particulate matter) and greenhouse gases emissions worldwide. Different types of fuel technologies have been developed in order to improve efficiency, reduce air pollution impacts, such as the case of liquefied natural gas (LNG) for heavy-duty vehicles. Many studies show the relationship between the effects of short and long-term exposure to particulate matter (PM) and, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), premature deaths worldwide as well as cardiorespiratory diseases in elderly population are related to this pollutant. Numerical Simulations of the Effect of Cold Fuel Temperature on In-Nozzle Flow and Cavitation Using a Model Injector Geometry

In the present study, Large Eddy Simulations (LES) have been performed with a 3D model of a step nozzle injector, using n-pentane as the injected fluid, a representative of the high-volatility components in gasoline. The influence of fuel temperature and injection pressure were investigated in conditions that shed light on engine cold-start, a phenomenon prevalent in a number of combustion applications, albeit not extensively studied. The test cases provide an impression of the in-nozzle phase change and the near-nozzle spray structure across different cavitation regimes. Results for the 20oC fuel temperature case (supercavitating regime) depict the formation of a continuous cavitation region that extends to the nozzle outlet. Collapse-induced pressure wave dynamics near the outlet cause a transient entrainment of air from the discharge chamber towards the nozzle.
